Senegal Sports Minister blocks Pape Thiaw’s exit as Federation seeks clarity on termination costs
The planned departure of Pape Thiaw as head coach of the Senegal national team has been put on hold after the country’s Minister of Sports reportedly refused to validate the Senegalese Football Federation’s (FSF) decision to begin proceedings to end his tenure.
The FSF recently announced its intention to initiate procedures to terminate Thiaw’s role as head coach, but 72 hours after the announcement, the move is yet to receive approval from the Sports Ministry.
According to sources close to the situation, the minister is requesting detailed reports on Senegal’s performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup before making a final decision on whether the federation’s action should proceed.
The reports are expected to provide a broader assessment of the team’s campaign and the technical decisions taken under Thiaw’s leadership before authorities determine the next steps.
Another major issue delaying the process is believed to be the financial implications of ending the coach’s contract. The Sports Minister is reportedly seeking clarity on the potential compensation package that would have to be paid should Thiaw’s contract be terminated.
Sources indicate that the federation is uncertain about the exact amount that could be owed to the coach, particularly if the dispute escalates to FIFA or the courts.
“The federation has no idea of the exact amount to be paid if the matter lands on FIFA’s table or in the courts. That’s why it’s negotiating with the coach to settle the matter amicably,” a source close to the discussions revealed.
The FSF is therefore exploring an out-of-court agreement with Thiaw in an attempt to avoid a prolonged legal battle and the possibility of additional financial burdens.
Thiaw, who guided Senegal after taking over from Aliou Cissé, has been under scrutiny following recent developments surrounding the national team. However, the final decision on his future now rests on further consultations between the federation and the Sports Ministry.
With the process currently stalled, negotiations are expected to continue as Senegal’s football authorities seek a solution that satisfies both sporting and financial considerations.
