Stanley Nwabali’s Chippa United return: The emotional battle that forced Super Eagles star to step away
Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali’s return to Chippa United was not driven by a lack of offers or a failed transfer move, but by a personal decision to step away from football and recover from a difficult period in his life.
The South African club confirmed the goalkeeper’s return on Monday, months after his unexpected departure in February. The move surprised many supporters, especially after Nwabali had been linked with several bigger clubs across Africa and the Middle East.
However, behind the scenes, the 30-year-old was dealing with challenges that made continuing football difficult. According to his representative, Mohammed Lawal, Nwabali’s decision to leave Chippa United was a necessary break to allow him to grieve, reset and regain his mental strength.
The goalkeeper endured a painful period between late 2024 and 2025 after losing both parents within a short space of time. Despite the emotional burden, he continued representing both Chippa United and the Super Eagles, but the pressure eventually became overwhelming.
“It has been very difficult for Stanley,” Lawal told ESPN.
“People don’t always know what is going on with these players. They only see them on the field. They know them as footballers, but they don’t know that they are human beings too. Like everyone else, they go through life’s challenges.”
Lawal explained that Nwabali’s struggles began to affect his performances and personality on the pitch, with the usually calm goalkeeper becoming more emotional during matches.
“He became responsible for everything. There was a lot he needed to take care of,” Lawal said.
“As a professional, he knew he had to keep playing, but it was affecting him; if he continued, he was going to destroy himself, because when you’re not in the right mental state, it shows.”
Offers existed, but Nwabali chose healing over a move
Nwabali’s absence from football sparked speculation that his expected transfer had collapsed, with reports linking him to clubs such as Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, Raja Casablanca and teams in Saudi Arabia.
But Lawal insists those opportunities were genuine and that the goalkeeper’s decision to remain unattached was personal.
“There were many offers for him, and people thought those deals fell through. They didn’t,” he said.
“Stanley just decided he wasn’t ready to go back into football at that time. He needed to step away, grieve, deal with everything, and come back in a better state of mind.”
According to Lawal, there was interest from different regions, including England, Saudi Arabia and other African leagues, but Nwabali and his team decided that returning to action immediately was not the right choice.
“There was serious interest from Saudi Arabia, Africa, and even England, but once we explained the situation, they understood. Stanley decided to stay out of the game for a few months and get himself in order,” he added.
The decision also had the backing of Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle, who remained in communication with the goalkeeper throughout his time away.
“Now Stanley is ready. He’s more than ready. He’s taken the time he needed, and the national team coach, Eric Chelle, also supported him throughout the process, communicating with him constantly.”
Why Chippa United was the right place for a comeback
Although Nwabali’s departure appeared sudden, Lawal revealed that the goalkeeper maintained a strong relationship with Chippa United chairman Siviwe ‘Chippa’ Mpengesi.
The mutual understanding between both parties made a return possible, with the club fully aware of the reasons behind his decision to step away.
“He maintained a good relationship with Chippa United,” Lawal said.
“The chairman understood his situation because Stanley explained everything. If Stanley had left after fighting with the chairman or forcing his way out, the club would never have welcomed him back.”
For Nwabali, returning to Chippa offers stability. Instead of joining a new club where his personal struggles would be unknown, he is back in an environment where people understand his journey.
“Another reason why he returned to Chippa United is because they already know him,” Lawal explained.
“If he had joined a new club after being out for several months, they would only know him as a goalkeeper, not as a person. They wouldn’t understand everything he had been through.”
Nwabali became a national hero during Nigeria’s run to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final, where his performances earned widespread praise. His return to Chippa United now marks the beginning of another chapter as he seeks to rediscover the form that made him one of Africa’s most recognised goalkeepers.
