French-Malian Kadidiatou Diani joins London City revolution as Lionesses land another global star
London City Lionesses have continued their remarkable recruitment drive by completing the signing of France international Kadidiatou Diani from Lyon on a three-year contract.
The 31-year-old winger becomes the latest world-class name to arrive at the Women’s Super League club, following the headline-grabbing additions of two-time Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas, Spain defender Mapi León and former England goalkeeper Mary Earps.
Diani’s arrival underlines London City’s growing ambition after an encouraging debut WSL campaign, where they finished sixth. Backed by owner Michele Kang, the independent club is rapidly assembling one of the strongest squads in European women’s football as it targets domestic honours and Champions League qualification.
Speaking after completing the move, Diani explained that London’s long-term vision was the decisive factor behind her decision.
“It’s an independent club and very ambitious.
“It’s something which is quite rare in women’s football and something I believe in a lot.
“We don’t necessarily need to depend on a men’s club to compete at the highest level, win titles and have a lot of success. I believe in the project.”
Lyon winner embraces new challenge
Diani leaves Lyon after an impressive spell that added further silverware to an already decorated career.
Having joined from Paris Saint-Germain in 2023, she helped Lyon secure three consecutive Division 1 Féminine titles while reaching the UEFA Women’s Champions League final twice. Her attacking brilliance was also recognised on the European stage as she finished as the competition’s top scorer during the 2023-24 campaign with eight goals.
Renowned for her pace, creativity and eye for goal, Diani brings invaluable experience to a London City side determined to establish itself among England’s elite.
Reunion with France team-mate
The move also reunites Diani with fellow France international Delphine Cascarino, who joined London City in January.
A veteran of the international stage, Diani has earned 126 caps for France and played a key role in the team’s run to the UEFA Women’s Euro semi-finals in 2022 before helping Les Bleues reach the quarter-finals of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Her wealth of experience is expected to strengthen a squad that already boasts several established international stars.
Kang’s vision gathers momentum
The transfer also represents an internal move within Michele Kang’s expanding football portfolio. Kang, who completed the purchase of London City Lionesses in February 2024, also owns Lyon and NWSL side Washington Spirit.
Diani’s switch is another indication of Kang’s determination to transform London City into a genuine force in the women’s game. With Putellas, León, Earps, Cascarino and now Diani all arriving within months, expectations have risen sharply ahead of the new WSL season.
After exceeding expectations in their first campaign in the top flight, London City have sent another statement of intent. The signing of one of Europe’s most accomplished forwards signals that merely competing in the WSL is no longer the objective – the Lionesses are building a squad capable of challenging for the biggest trophies.
