Stellenbosch FC sign two players

South African outfit Premiership side Stellenbosch FC have bolstered their squad ahead of the new season by completing the signings of experienced duo George Matlou and Terrence Mashego.

The Cape Winelands outfit confirmed the arrivals of both players as head coach Gavin Hunt continues to add proven top-flight quality to his squad in preparation for another demanding domestic campaign.

Matlou joins Stellenbosch as a free agent following his departure from Kaizer Chiefs after his contract was not renewed. The midfielder’s spell at Naturena was largely disrupted by recurring injuries, which limited his opportunities to establish himself as a regular starter and ultimately ended his hopes of earning a new deal.

Despite his struggles with fitness during his time at Chiefs, Matlou remains highly regarded for his technical ability, composure in midfield and experience in the Premier Soccer League. Stellenbosch will be hoping he can rediscover the form that made him one of the league’s most dependable midfielders before his move to Amakhosi.

Meanwhile, left-back Terrence Mashego arrives on a season-long loan from CAF Champions League winners Mamelodi Sundowns after spending the previous campaign with Durban City.

Mashego enjoyed a productive spell at Durban City, where he played an important role in the club’s successful Nedbank Cup campaign, adding another major trophy to his growing list of achievements.

Although he returns to Sundowns as a CAF Champions League winner, the Brazilians have opted to send the experienced defender out on loan once again, giving him the opportunity to secure regular first-team football with Stellenbosch.

His arrival provides Gavin Hunt with an experienced option at left-back, while also bringing leadership and winning mentality to a squad that continues to establish itself among South Africa’s most competitive sides.

The additions of Matlou and Mashego underline Stellenbosch’s ambition to remain competitive in the Betway Premiership, with the club investing in players who possess valuable experience at the highest level of South African football.

Hunt has long favoured players with proven top-flight pedigree, and the arrivals of the two seasoned campaigners fit perfectly into that recruitment strategy.

As Stellenbosch prepare for the new campaign, the club will be hoping Matlou can put his injury setbacks behind him and produce the consistent performances that once made him one of the country’s most promising midfielders. At the same time, Mashego will be eager to make an immediate impact and prove he still has what it takes to compete at the highest level after another temporary move away from Mamelodi Sundowns.

With both players bringing quality, versatility and valuable experience, Stellenbosch have added two important pieces to their squad as they aim to challenge strongly in the Betway Premiership and other competitions during the upcoming season.
