Kylian Mbappe hunts missing piece of his World Cup legacy against Spain

Kylian Mbappe has conquered almost every challenge the World Cup has placed in front of him, but one final barrier remains.

As France prepare to face Spain in Tuesday’s 2026 World Cup semi-final at Dallas Stadium, the Real Madrid forward will be chasing a personal milestone that would further enhance his already remarkable tournament legacy — scoring in every knockout stage of football’s biggest competition.

Mbappe has found the net in the Round of 32, Round of 16, quarter-finals and finals during his World Cup career. The semi-final stage, however, remains the only knockout round where he is yet to score.

France’s hopes of reaching a third consecutive World Cup final will once again rest heavily on their captain, who has continued to prove that international football brings out his most devastating qualities.

France’s attacking weapon aiming for second World Cup crown

The reigning champions arrived at the 2026 tournament carrying huge expectations after lifting the trophy in 2018 and narrowly missing out against Argentina in the 2022 final.

Much of their confidence came from an attacking unit regarded as one of the strongest in world football, and Didier Deschamps’ side have delivered throughout the competition.

Michael Olise has emerged as one of France’s leading creators with five assists, while Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele has contributed five goals and two assists.

But above everyone stands Mbappe.

The 27-year-old has once again been France’s decisive figure, scoring eight goals and providing two assists to move level with Lionel Messi at the top of the Golden Boot race.

His latest performances have reinforced his reputation as a player who thrives under the brightest lights.

While his club season with Real Madrid did not always reach the extraordinary standards expected of him, the World Cup has once again brought out the unstoppable version of Mbappe — the player who has made the tournament his stage.

20 goals, 20 appearances: Mbappe rewriting World Cup history

Mbappe’s eight goals in this tournament have taken his overall World Cup tally to 20, moving him beyond Germany legend Miroslav Klose’s previous mark of 16 goals.

Messi has since moved ahead with 21, but Mbappe’s scoring rate remains extraordinary.

The French forward has scored 20 goals in just 20 World Cup appearances — averaging exactly one goal per match.

Even more impressive is his record when the pressure rises. Twelve of those goals have come in only 11 knockout matches, highlighting his ability to deliver when the stakes are highest.

Since making his World Cup debut as a teenager in 2018, Mbappe has repeatedly produced defining moments on the biggest stage.

Semi-finals the only missing piece

Mbappe’s knockout journey began spectacularly in 2018 when he announced himself to the world with a brilliant brace against Argentina in the Round of 16.

Four years later, he repeated that feat against Poland before scoring the decisive goal in France’s 1-0 victory over Paraguay in this year’s tournament.

The newly introduced Round of 32 also became another milestone completed when Mbappe scored twice in France’s 3-0 win over Sweden.

The quarter-finals were the only knockout stage where he had previously failed to score. That changed against Morocco, when Mbappe opened the scoring despite missing a penalty as France secured a place in the last four.

But the semi-finals have remained frustrating territory.

France defeated Belgium 1-0 in the 2018 semi-final through Samuel Umtiti’s goal, while Theo Hernandez and Randal Kolo Muani scored in the 2-0 win over Morocco in 2022.

Mbappe played in both matches but could not find the breakthrough himself.

Spain clash offers another chance for history

The finals, by contrast, have brought some of Mbappe’s greatest World Cup moments.

He scored in France’s 4-2 victory over Croatia in 2018 and produced one of the greatest individual displays in World Cup final history four years later by scoring a hat-trick against Argentina.

Although France eventually lost on penalties, Mbappe became the first player since Geoff Hurst in 1966 to score three goals in a World Cup final.

Now, only the semi-final remains unconquered.

Against Spain, Mbappe has the opportunity to complete a rare World Cup scoring collection and add another chapter to a tournament career that is already among the greatest ever recorded.
