Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies target third CAF Women’s Champions League title

Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies are aiming to make history by winning a third CAF Women’s Champions League title after securing victory at the CAF Women’s Champions League COSAFA Qualifiers in Gaborone on Saturday.

The South African side completed the regional tournament unbeaten, scoring 22 goals and conceding only twice in five matches. Their performance has strengthened their belief that they can reclaim continental glory, although midfielder Malebana says the next challenge will require even greater focus.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Malebana identified self-belief, discipline and consistency as crucial to Sundowns’ hopes of lifting the trophy again.

“The CAF Champions League is a different challenge, and that’s something we’re all excited about. We know the level will be higher and every game will demand maximum concentration. For us to win a third title, we’ll need consistency, discipline, hard work and belief.

“We have a very good squad, but we know talent alone is not enough. We have to take it game by game, stay humble and fight for each other. Hopefully, we can go all the way, make history again and get an opportunity to represent South Africa in the Club World Cup,” said Malebana.

Sundowns’ unbeaten run in Gaborone was built on strong attacking performances and defensive resilience. Malebana believes the results also reflected the unity within the squad and the contribution made by every member of the team.

“I think it shows the character and mentality we have as a team. To go through the whole competition without losing a game is a big achievement, and it wasn’t easy.

“Every player contributed, whether they were starting, coming off the bench or supporting from the sidelines. The competition within the squad pushes everyone to improve, and the most important thing is that we stayed together and kept working towards the same goal. I’m really proud of the team,” added Malebana.

The tournament was also personally significant for Malebana, who won her first cap in Sundowns’ third match. She made her international debut during the 4-1 victory over Costa do Sol.

Malebana said the achievement added to the satisfaction of winning the regional competition, particularly after Sundowns had fallen short the previous year.

“It’s an amazing feeling, honestly. Last year, when I was promoted, we came close but unfortunately didn’t win it. So, to come back this year and actually lift the trophy means a lot to me.

“Earning my first cap in the same campaign makes it even more special. I’m grateful to the coaches, my teammates and everyone at Sundowns for trusting and believing in me. It’s a moment I’ll always remember, but I also know it’s just the beginning.”

Sundowns will now turn their attention to the CAF Women’s Champions League, where they will face a higher level of competition as they pursue a third title. Malebana says the squad’s unity, humility and willingness to work for one another will be central to their ambitions.
