World Cup 2026: French ambassador condemns racist remarks by Argentine official
An Argentine regional politician has come under strong criticism after making racist remarks about the France national team following Les Bleus’ 1-0 victory over Paraguay at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, prompting an immediate response from France’s ambassador to Argentina.
The latest controversy emerged after Hebe Casado, vice-governor of Argentina’s Mendoza province, published a message on social media platform X targeting the French side.
Her comments have added to growing concerns over racist rhetoric directed at the France team during the tournament.
The incident comes shortly after Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla also faced criticism over remarks involving the French national team, making this the second controversy involving a South American public official in recent days.
France’s victory over Paraguay secured another important step in their World Cup campaign, but the post-match discussion quickly shifted away from football after Casado’s message attracted widespread attention.
In the post on X, the Argentine official wrote:
“Good, Paraguay. The African team, no way. I can’t stand Mbappé.”
The message immediately drew condemnation from French ambassador to Argentina Romain Nadal, who described the remarks as unacceptable and racist.
According to the ambassador, the comments were incompatible with the values that underpin relations between France and Argentina.
He said the statements were “undeniably racist” and added that they “disqualify her from working with the embassy or participating in meetings where the embassy is present. There is no place for racism in Franco-Argentine cooperation.”
The response effectively means Casado has been declared unwelcome at the French embassy during the current period, underlining the seriousness with which the diplomatic mission has treated the incident.
French embassy responds firmly
The embassy’s reaction came swiftly after the social media post began circulating.
Rather than allowing the comments to pass without response, Ambassador Nadal publicly criticised the vice-governor’s statement, stressing that racism has no place in diplomatic relations or in football.
The ambassador’s intervention shifted the debate beyond sport, placing the focus on respect and the responsibilities carried by elected public officials.
France’s national team has regularly celebrated its multicultural identity, and comments targeting players on the basis of their background have repeatedly sparked international criticism in recent years.
The latest remarks have therefore generated another wave of attention surrounding racism in football and public discourse.
Official defends her comments
Following the backlash, Casado rejected the accusations against her and defended the message she had published online.
On X, she responded by saying:
“Only intelligent people understand sarcasm.”
She later addressed the controversy during an interview with a radio station in Mendoza.
According to the report, the vice-governor argued that her remarks were part of what she described as “football folklore.”
She also criticised what she referred to as “political correctness” while maintaining her position despite the diplomatic reaction from France.
Her explanations, however, did little to ease the controversy, which continued to attract attention after the French embassy’s response.
Second controversy involving South American official
The latest incident follows another controversy involving Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla, whose comments about the French national team had already generated criticism.
With two separate cases involving South American politicians emerging within a short period, attention has once again turned to racist language directed at France during the World Cup.
Although the controversies have unfolded away from the pitch, they have become part of the wider conversation surrounding the tournament.
France, meanwhile, remains focused on its World Cup campaign after edging Paraguay 1-0, while the diplomatic dispute sparked by Casado’s comments continues to dominate headlines off the field.
