CAF President Patrice Motsepe mourns passing of South Africa World Cup star Jayden Adams

Confederation Africaine de Football President Dr Patrice Motsepe has expressed deep sadness following the death of South Africa international and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams at the age of 25.

In an official statement, CAF confirmed that Motsepe had joined the African football community in mourning Adams, who recently represented Bafana Bafana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“The President of the Confédération Africaine de Football (“CAF”), Dr Patrice Motsepe, is deeply saddened by the passing of South Africa international and Mamelodi Sundowns player, Jayden Adams,” the statement read.

Adams was part of the South Africa squad that made history at the ongoing World Cup by reaching the knockout stage for the first time. He featured during Bafana Bafana’s campaign before their journey ended against co-hosts Canada in the Round of 32.

The midfielder also enjoyed major success at club level with Mamelodi Sundowns, helping the South African giants win the 2026 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League in Rabat.

“Jayden Adams, 25, played for Bafana Bafana during the FIFA World Cup 2026 and was part of the Mamelodi Sundowns that won the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League 2026 in Rabat,” CAF stated.

Motsepe extended his condolences on behalf of the continental governing body and its 54 member associations.

“On behalf of CAF and its 54 Member Associations, Dr Motsepe conveys his heartfelt condolences to the South African Football Association (“SAFA”), and its President, Dr Danny Jordaan, Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club and to the Family of Jayden Adams.”

Before joining Sundowns in January 2025, Adams developed through Stellenbosch FC’s academy and became the club’s first academy graduate to sign a professional contract. His performances eventually earned him a regular place in the South African national team.

The 25-year-old had only recently returned from the World Cup, where he played a role in South Africa’s historic campaign. His death has triggered tributes from across the football world, including FIFA President Gianni Infantino, South African officials and the South African Football Players Union.

“May Jayden Adam’s Soul Rest in Peace,” CAF concluded.
