Namibia star Peter Shalulile explains decision to leave Sundowns after trophy-laden six-year spell
Namibian striker Peter Shalulile has opened up on the decision to leave Mamelodi Sundowns, revealing that he personally requested the opportunity to move on in search of a fresh challenge after the expiration of his contract.
The prolific forward brought an end to a remarkable chapter at Chloorkop earlier this month, with his departure coming as a surprise to many supporters given his outstanding contribution to the club’s recent success.
Shalulile established himself as one of the most consistent and lethal forwards in South African football during his time at Sundowns, playing a pivotal role in the club’s domestic dominance and helping them lift the CAF Champions League title.
Despite his impressive record, the Namibia international admitted he reached a point where he felt it was time to embrace a new challenge and prove himself elsewhere.
“It was the time where I needed to dig deep within myself,” Shalulile said.
The striker explained that even during difficult periods, particularly when goals were not coming regularly, he remained committed to improving his game through extra training sessions.
“Regardless of not scoring, I could still come to the gym, my finishing drills. I decided when I spoke to my agent that the best thing for me to do is to ask the club, the president, to give me an opportunity to showcase my talent somewhere else.”
His comments suggest the decision to leave was driven by a personal desire for a fresh environment rather than any disagreement with the club.
Shalulile also used the opportunity to express heartfelt gratitude to the Mamelodi Sundowns supporters, acknowledging the crucial role they played throughout his successful spell at the club.
“Thank you to the supporters, they have been amazing people, they kept on singing, giving us energy. Without them, it’s tough on the pitch.”
The experienced striker also paid tribute to the club’s leadership, thanking both the current and former administrators who played a part in bringing him to Sundowns and supporting him throughout his journey.
“I’d like to thank the chairman for everything, since he took over, and he’s been an amazing person. I salute them for bringing me here, even the previous people who left, I’d love to thank them from the bottom of my heart.”
Shalulile leaves Mamelodi Sundowns as one of the club’s modern-day legends, having enjoyed a trophy-filled spell marked by goals, individual accolades and memorable performances in both domestic and continental competitions.
Despite being unattached at the moment, the 32-year-old’s quality and experience are expected to attract interest from several clubs across Africa and beyond as he prepares for the next chapter of his illustrious career.
