Didier Deschamps opens up on Argentine referee appointment for Morocco clash

France head coach Didier Deschamps has responded to FIFA’s decision to appoint an all-Argentine refereeing team for Les Bleus’ 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-final clash against Morocco, insisting his focus remains solely on the opposition rather than the officials.

The appointment has generated debate ahead of Thursday’s blockbuster encounter after FIFA named Argentine referee Facundo Tello to take charge of the match, assisted by an all-Argentine officiating team.

The decision has drawn attention given France’s World Cup final defeat to Argentina in Qatar in 2022, while it also comes in the wake of the controversial refereeing display during Argentina’s 3-2 victory over Egypt in the round of 16.

That match, officiated by French referee François Letexier, sparked widespread debate after several contentious decisions, including a VAR intervention that ruled out a goal for Egypt.

Speaking during his pre-match press conference, Deschamps admitted that the nationality of the officials could become a talking point but stressed that referee appointments are beyond his control.

“There is no doubt that there is a possible impact. It may concern you, but I adhere to the principle that appointments are made and we cannot change them,” Deschamps said.

The France boss reiterated his confidence in FIFA’s referees, expressing hope that Thursday’s officials would perform to the highest standard.

“I try to trust the referees. I hope that the referee and his assistants, who will officiate tomorrow, will be at the same level as Mr. Letexier and his assistants who officiated another match (the Egypt-Argentina match). Obviously, there are always decisions that may be controversial, and it all depends on your point of view.”

Deschamps made it clear that France’s attention is firmly on Morocco and not the officiating team.

“I consider Morocco my opponent, not the referee. On the contrary, his role is to ensure that the laws of football are applied with the greatest possible fairness.”

The French coach also refused to look beyond the quarter-finals despite suggestions that France could be heading towards another deep run in the tournament.

“I’m not thinking about it at all. Perhaps this was our last match in the World Cup. My goal is to do my best to ensure things go well. I have a strong motivation to ensure we achieve our goals.”

Deschamps also reflected on the controversy surrounding France’s previous World Cup meeting with Morocco and insisted that refereeing decisions are part of football.

“The only mistakes are those made by the players. In every match, there are situations that can go in any direction, and this applies again to the current World Cup. Yes, some mistakes can be counted, and it is not about revenge; we cannot change what happened.”

“We hope that the mistakes from both sides tomorrow will be as few as possible.”

France and Morocco will battle for a place in the semi-finals on Thursday, with the winner moving one step closer to lifting the 2026 FIFA World Cup trophy.
