World Cup 2026: Egypt’s disallowed goal should have stood, says former Premier League referee Graham Scott
Former Premier League referee Graham Scott has said Egypt were wrongly denied a goal in their dramatic Round of 16 defeat to Argentina at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The seven-time African champions crashed out of the tournament despite surrendering a two-goal lead, losing 3-2 to the defending world champions after a remarkable second-half comeback.
One of the major talking points from the contest was the decision to disallow a first-half goal from Mostafa Zico following a VAR review. The goal was chalked off after officials ruled that Egypt’s Attia had fouled Argentina defender Lisandro Martínez earlier in the build-up.
Speaking to The Athletic, Scott criticised the decision, insisting the goal should have been allowed to stand.
“The decision to disallow Egypt’s goal was incorrect,” Scott said.
“Attia’s challenge with Lisandro Martínez was normal contact and should have been treated as such, not as a foul.
“The incident happened around 100 yards from goal, and Argentina had enough time to reorganise defensively.
“It is understandable that Egypt feel they have been treated unfairly.”
Despite the setback, Egypt responded impressively, with Zico eventually scoring to double his side’s advantage after they had already taken the lead, putting the Pharaohs within touching distance of a famous place in the quarter-finals.
However, Argentina mounted a stunning comeback. Cristian Romero pulled one back before captain Lionel Messi equalised after earlier seeing his penalty saved by Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shoubir.
With the momentum firmly in their favour, Enzo Fernández scored the winner to complete the turnaround and send Argentina into the quarter-finals, leaving Egypt heartbroken after a controversial exit.
