Kaizer Chiefs join Orlando Pirates, AmaZulu in race for free-agent goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner
Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly entered the race to sign highly-rated goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner, setting up a transfer battle with fellow South African Premiership clubs Orlando Pirates and AmaZulu for the services of the free agent.
Leaner is currently without a club after Sekhukhune United opted against activating the option to extend his contract before last month’s deadline, bringing his spell with Babina Noko to an end. The 27-year-old, who previously featured for Maritzburg United, is now one of the most sought-after goalkeepers on the South African transfer market.
Orlando Pirates had initially appeared to be frontrunners for the shot-stopper’s signature, having tracked his progress for some time. However, the Buccaneers recently secured the future of their second-choice goalkeeper, Melusi Buthelezi, a development that could limit Leaner’s opportunities for regular first-team football should he move to the Soweto giants.
That situation has opened the door for rivals Kaizer Chiefs to make their move.
The Glamour Boys are believed to be keen on strengthening their goalkeeping department ahead of the new season. While Brandon Petersen remains one of the club’s senior options between the posts, Chiefs are reportedly looking to add greater competition and depth, with Leaner viewed as a goalkeeper capable of challenging for a regular starting role.
His arrival would provide Amakhosi with another reliable option as the club continues its rebuilding process under its technical team, with improving defensive stability expected to be a major priority.
AmaZulu have also emerged as serious contenders for Leaner’s signature.
Usuthu are looking to reinforce their goalkeeping ranks following the departure of Richard Ofori, whose exit has left the Durban-based outfit short of experienced options. Leaner’s availability on a free transfer makes him an attractive target for a club seeking quality without paying a transfer fee.
The former Maritzburg United goalkeeper has earned a reputation as a composed and dependable shot-stopper, impressing with his reflexes, command of the penalty area and ability to play out from the back. Despite spending limited time at Sekhukhune United, his qualities have not gone unnoticed, with several clubs convinced he has the potential to become a first-choice goalkeeper.
With three ambitious Premiership clubs now reportedly interested, Leaner faces an important decision over the next stage of his career. Regular playing time, the club’s ambitions and long-term project are all expected to play key roles in determining his destination.
As the transfer window gathers momentum, the race for Renaldo Leaner’s signature is expected to intensify, with Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and AmaZulu all hoping to convince the talented goalkeeper that their project offers the best platform for his future.
