Graham Potter praises Genesis Antwi after handing him first Sweden call-up
Sweden head coach Graham Potter has praised Chelsea youngster Genesis Antwi after handing the 19-year-old defender his first senior international call-up ahead of the November international break.
The right-back has impressed during his loan spell at French Ligue 1 side Strasbourg, making eight appearances and accumulating 709 minutes across all competitions this season.
His performances have earned him recognition from Potter, who included him in Sweden’s squad for the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Poland.
Antwi’s selection comes following an injury to Bologna defender Emil Holm, creating an opportunity for the Chelsea youngster to earn his first senior invitation.
Explaining his decision, Potter highlighted the defender’s exceptional pace and performances against some of France’s leading clubs.
“Genesis has done well in the U21 national team. With Emil Holm injured, we have chosen Felix Beijmo as a slightly more experienced full-back and then Genesis with his qualities such as incredible pace and speed. He has done well against teams like PSG and Monaco,” Potter said.
The former Chelsea manager also revealed that he had consulted people familiar with Antwi’s development at Stamford Bridge and received encouraging feedback.
“I have spoken to people who have worked with him there and they think highly of him, so I have a good idea. He will come in and help the group,” he added.
Antwi earns international recognition
Antwi joined Chelsea’s academy as an Under-12 player after moving from Stockholm to London and progressed through the club’s youth ranks.
He made two senior appearances for Chelsea during the 2024/25 campaign before joining Strasbourg on a season-long loan in August 2026 to gain regular first-team experience.
The defender has taken advantage of the opportunity in France, establishing himself as an important member of Strasbourg’s squad.
His first senior Sweden call-up represents another significant milestone in his development, having previously represented the country at Under-21 level.
Sweden will face Bosnia and Herzegovina on November 14 before travelling to Poland for their second Nations League fixture on November 17.
Antwi will now hope to impress Potter during the international camp and potentially make his senior debut for the Swedish national team.
