Ismaila Sarr denies rift with Pape Gueye

Senegal forward Ismaila Sarr has firmly dismissed reports claiming he was involved in a confrontation with teammate Pape Gueye during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing the allegations as false and an attempt to create divisions within the national team.

The rumours surfaced in the aftermath of Senegal’s disappointing elimination from the tournament, with speculation suggesting tensions had emerged within the Lions of Teranga camp. However, Sarr has now broken his silence, insisting there was never any altercation between the two players.

In a statement shared on his Instagram account, the Senegal international categorically denied the claims and urged supporters not to believe stories designed to undermine the unity of the squad.

“I also want to put an end to a rumour that is doing the rounds: there has never been any altercation between Pape Gueye and me. It is completely untrue. In difficult times, some people seek to create divisions. Our response will always be the same: to remain united.”

Sarr stressed that the players remain united despite the disappointment of their World Cup campaign, adding that the squad shares the pain felt by supporters following their early exit from the competition.

“We understand your disappointment, because we share it too. We had the same dream as you, and we are the first to be disappointed that we were unable to offer you more.”

The winger’s statement comes at a time when Senegal are attempting to move on from a frustrating tournament that ended in the Round of 16. In the days following their elimination, speculation surrounding the atmosphere within the squad intensified, prompting Sarr to publicly address the reports.

By rejecting the rumours, the 28-year-old sought to reassure fans that the players remain united and committed to representing their country with pride despite the setback.

Sarr’s message has been widely viewed as an effort to protect the harmony within the national team and prevent unfounded speculation from overshadowing the work done by the squad throughout the tournament.

With the World Cup now behind them, Senegal will shift their focus to upcoming international competitions, where the Lions of Teranga will aim to bounce back and re-establish themselves among Africa’s leading football nations.

For Sarr, the priority is clear: maintaining unity within the squad and ensuring that the disappointment of the 2026 World Cup serves as motivation rather than a source of division as Senegal begins preparations for future challenges.
