Belgium head coach Rudi Garcia has defended the heated exchange between Youri Tielemans and Leandro Trossard during his side’s dramatic fightback against Senegal, insisting it reflected the determination and competitive mentality he wants to see from his players.

Speaking after the match, Garcia was in an upbeat mood following Belgium’s comeback. While he had earlier drawn attention for his strong comments about Senegal, the coach focused on the character shown by his own team as they continued to battle despite facing a difficult situation.

One of the defining moments came shortly before Belgium pulled a goal back and launched their comeback. Television cameras captured Tielemans and Trossard in an animated discussion while Belgium were under significant pressure, with Romelu Lukaku stepping in to calm both players.

Rather than criticising the confrontation, Garcia welcomed it as evidence that his players cared deeply about the outcome.

“Romelu (Lukaku) first took care of calming them both down. My players have the right to argue, to disagree. I like that. I don’t know why they were fighting, but I want to see players who are willing to shake things up, with real grit.”

The Belgian manager believes such moments demonstrate a stronger mentality within the squad, something he feels has developed considerably since taking charge of the national team 18 months ago.

Garcia explained that one of his priorities after his appointment was to make Belgium more competitive, particularly in physical contests and difficult moments during matches.

He now believes the players are showing greater personality by expressing themselves openly on the pitch instead of remaining silent when tensions rise.

For the coach, disagreements between teammates are not necessarily a negative sign if they stem from a shared desire to improve the team’s performance and achieve victory.

Reflecting on the changes he has witnessed during his tenure, Garcia said the squad has become more willing to challenge one another and demand higher standards from each other.

“When I arrived in this position eighteen months ago, I felt the Belgian team lacked aggression in duels. Now, we have a team that speaks its mind. The worst thing is to say nothing. Or else you die.”

Garcia’s comments underline his belief that passion, accountability and the willingness to confront difficult moments are important qualities within his squad.

In his view, the exchange between Tielemans and Trossard was not a sign of division but an illustration of a team refusing to give up as Belgium fought back against Senegal.
