Mexico’s celebrations after securing a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 ended in tragedy after two people died in overcrowded scenes in Mexico City following the team’s 2-0 victory over Ecuador.

The result sparked widespread celebrations across the Mexican capital on Tuesday night, with more than one million supporters gathering in the streets to mark their country’s progression to the knockout stage.

However, the festivities were overshadowed by a fatal incident as authorities confirmed that two people lost their lives during the mass celebrations.

According to the Mexico City health secretary, who spoke to AFP, the victims were a 19-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man. Both died from asphyxiation after becoming caught in the dense crowds that filled the city’s streets.

The deaths cast a sombre mood over what had begun as a night of national celebration following Mexico’s convincing victory over Ecuador.

Mexico had booked its place in the last 16 with an impressive 2-0 win, prompting huge numbers of supporters to pour into the capital to celebrate the achievement.

As the crowds continued to grow throughout the evening, emergency services responded to the incident involving the two victims, whose deaths were later confirmed by officials.

Local media have also reported that a third person may have died during the celebrations. However, that information has not been confirmed by the authorities.

Officials have so far only confirmed the deaths of the 19-year-old woman and the 44-year-old man.

The tragic events unfolded while more than one million people were celebrating Mexico’s qualification for the knockout rounds, turning what had been a joyous occasion into one marked by grief.
