Fernando Da Cruz set to arrive in Johannesburg as Kaizer Chiefs era begins

New Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz is expected to arrive in Johannesburg this week to officially begin his tenure at Naturena, ushering in a new chapter for one of South Africa’s biggest football clubs ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The Frenchman will take charge of first-team preparations as Amakhosi intensify their pre-season programme, with supporters eager to see the direction he takes after being appointed as the club’s new head coach on a two-year contract, with an option to extend for a further season.

Da Cruz’s arrival marks the official start of his duties at the club’s Naturena headquarters, where he is expected to meet players and technical staff before overseeing preparations for the upcoming campaign.

The 51-year-old returns to Kaizer Chiefs having previously worked with the club during a pre-season programme before taking up a role with the Moroccan Football Federation as Technical Director. His experience across European and African football, coupled with his UEFA Pro Licence, was a key factor in the club’s decision to entrust him with leading the team’s rebuilding project.

Chiefs have placed their faith in Da Cruz to restore the club’s competitiveness after several inconsistent seasons. The appointment follows the departure of co-coaches Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef, with the Soweto giants opting to return to a traditional coaching structure led by a single head coach.

His arrival also comes at a crucial stage of the club’s preparations, with Kaizer Chiefs already strengthening both their technical team and playing squad ahead of the new campaign. Da Cruz is expected to assess the current group before making further decisions on recruitment and squad composition as Amakhosi target a return to domestic success and a strong showing in continental competition.

With pre-season now gathering momentum, all eyes will be on Naturena as Da Cruz begins the task of reshaping one of African football’s most decorated clubs, carrying the expectations of a passionate fan base eager to see Kaizer Chiefs challenge for major honours once again.
