Erling Haaland celebrates after scoring for Norway against Ivory Coast at the 2026 World Cup

Erling Haaland’s decisive strike against Ivory Coast has taken his international tally to 60 goals in just 53 appearances for Norway, with his remarkable scoring rate prompting a theoretical projection that he could finish his career with 260 goals for his country.

The Norway striker once again proved decisive in the 2026 World Cup, scoring the winning goal in a tense knockout encounter despite spending much of the match on the fringes of play.

His latest contribution has reignited discussion about the unique qualities that define his game.

While Haaland was not the most influential player for long periods in Dallas, he once again delivered when it mattered most, turning a closely contested match in Norway’s favour.

Antonio Nusa and Amad Diallo attracted attention for the quality of their goals during the contest, but Haaland’s impact came through his instinctive movement and ability to produce the decisive moment.

Goals continue to define Haaland’s influence

The latest strike further strengthened an international record that already ranks among Norway’s finest.

Haaland has now scored five goals in three appearances at the 2026 World Cup, continuing the prolific form that has characterised his international career.

His overall tally of 60 goals from 53 senior appearances gives him a scoring average that, according to BBC Football, is currently ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo’s pace for his national team.

The figures become even more striking when viewed alongside Norway’s recent history on the international stage.

A record built despite missed tournaments

According to BBC Football, Haaland’s first 55 international goals came without appearing at a major tournament because Norway failed to qualify for major finals during the early years of his international career.

Since making his World Cup debut, the striker has continued to score consistently in competitive fixtures.

He has found the net 25 times in his last 13 competitive international matches, including two goals in Norway’s commanding 4-1 victory over Italy, a result regarded as an important step in securing qualification.

Coach backs his star striker

Norway head coach Ståle Solbakken praised Haaland’s contribution following another decisive display at the World Cup.

The coach said he would not exchange his striker for any other player after watching him score five goals in three tournament appearances.

BBC Football also highlighted a theoretical projection based on Haaland maintaining his current scoring rate while Norway consistently qualifies for major tournaments.

Under that scenario, the striker could finish his international career with as many as 260 goals by the age of 41.

The publication stressed, however, that the figure remains purely hypothetical and would depend on several factors, including Haaland’s longevity, physical condition and Norway’s ability to continue qualifying for major international competitions.

For now, the only certainty is that Haaland continues to add to a scoring record that is already among the most prolific in international football, with another crucial goal helping Norway extend their World Cup campaign.
