Senegal international Krépin Diatta has officially parted ways with AS Monaco after the expiry of his contract, ending a five-and-a-half-year spell with the Ligue 1 club.

The Principality side confirmed the 27-year-old’s departure on Tuesday, bringing to a close a period in which he made more than 140 appearances in the red and white shirt after joining from Club Brugge in January 2021.

A product of the Oslo FA academy, Diatta contributed eight goals and nine assists during his time at Monaco. His spell, however, was marked by both memorable moments and significant setbacks.

One of the biggest challenges of his career came at the end of 2021 when he suffered a serious cruciate ligament injury.

The setback ruled him out of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, denying Senegal one of its key attacking players as the Lions went on to secure the nation’s first continental title.

Following his lengthy recovery, Diatta adapted to a different role on the pitch in an effort to regain regular playing time. The winger was deployed as a right wing-back, allowing him to work his way back into the first-team picture.

His opportunities remained limited last season, with the Senegal international making 22 appearances across all competitions.

He was initially omitted from Monaco’s UEFA Champions League squad but later returned to the team after an injury to Denis Zakaria created an opening.

Despite facing difficulties at club level, Diatta has continued to play an important role for Senegal. The African champions have continued to rely on his experience, and he remains one of the most trusted members of head coach Pape Thiaw’s squad.

Although Senegal endured a challenging start to the FIFA World Cup, the Lions recovered to secure a place in the Round of 32, with Diatta among the senior figures helping guide the team through the competition.

Now a free agent from 1 July, the Senegalese winger is preparing for the next stage of his career. Reports have linked him with a possible move to Premier League side Crystal Palace, who are said to be monitoring his situation.

In its farewell statement, AS Monaco paid tribute to Diatta’s service to the club.

“Having arrived on the Rock in January 2021, Krépin Diatta leaves AS Monaco at the end of his contract, after more than 140 matches in the Red & White jersey.”

The club added:

“The Club thanks Krépin for his commitment over these five seasons and wishes him all the best for the rest of his career, as well as a successful run with Senegal at the World Cup.”

Diatta now turns his attention to the next chapter of his club career while continuing to play a key role for Senegal as the Lions pursue success at the FIFA World Cup
