World Cup 2026: Morocco eliminate Netherlands in penalty drama to reach Round of 16

Morocco are through to the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating the Netherlands on penalties following a dramatic 1-1 draw in their Round of 32 encounter.

The Atlas Lions showed remarkable determination to fight back late in the contest before holding their nerve in the shootout to eliminate one of Europe’s strongest sides and continue their impressive run in the tournament.

Morocco Dominate Early Chances

Morocco started the match brightly and looked dangerous throughout the opening stages. Their first major opportunity arrived in the 20th minute when Neil El Aynaoui rose inside the penalty area to meet a corner kick, steering a powerful header towards the roof of the net, only for Bart Verbruggen to produce an astonishing save.

The pressure continued moments later as Achraf Hakimi received a clever low pass just outside the box before firing a powerful strike towards goal. Once again, Verbruggen reacted brilliantly to deny Morocco with another outstanding save.

The Netherlands struggled to create clear openings during the first half, although Micky van de Ven attempted to test Bono from the edge of the penalty area shortly before the break. The Moroccan goalkeeper handled the effort comfortably as both sides went into half-time level.

Gakpo Breaks the Deadlock for the Dutch

After a tense and tactical second half, the breakthrough finally came in the 72nd minute. Cody Gakpo connected with a pass inside the penalty area and calmly fired a low finish into the middle of the net to hand the Netherlands the advantage.

The Dutch appeared to be edging closer to qualification as Morocco searched desperately for a route back into the contest.

Late Morocco Equaliser Forces Extra Time

Just when it seemed the Netherlands would progress, Morocco produced a dramatic late response deep into stoppage time.

Chemsdine Talbi floated a clever lofted pass into the penalty area where Issa Diop timed his run perfectly before heading into the top right corner from close range to make it 1-1 and spark wild celebrations among the Moroccan supporters.

Morocco nearly completed the turnaround in extra time when Soufiane Rahimi created space inside the box and struck towards the left corner, but Verbruggen once again rescued the Netherlands with an astonishing save.

Morocco Hold Their Nerve in the Shootout

The match was eventually settled on penalties after neither side could find a winner in extra time.

Teun Koopmeiners successfully converted the opening penalty for the Netherlands, but Morocco responded despite Neil El Aynaoui hitting the crossbar with his effort.

Justin Kluivert then struck the post for the Dutch, allowing Morocco back into the shootout. Soufiane Rahimi and Chemsdine Talbi both converted confidently for the Atlas Lions, while Wout Weghorst scored for the Netherlands.

Quinten Timber missed his penalty for the Dutch, although Morocco also suffered frustration when Achraf Hakimi crashed his effort against the post.

The decisive moment arrived when Bono denied Crysencio Summerville with an important save after the winger’s effort lacked power and placement.

That left Ismael Saibari with the opportunity to send Morocco through, and the midfielder made no mistake as he calmly slotted the winning penalty into the bottom corner.

Morocco Set Up Canada Clash

The victory sends Morocco into the Round of 16, where they will now face co-hosts Canada as their memorable World Cup 2026 campaign continues.
