Top South African gaffer Pitso Mosimane applies for Bafana Bafana coaching job
Top South African tactician Pitso Mosimane is seeking for a second Bafana Bafana spell after applying for the coaching job, with Hugo Broos expected to depart at the end of the 2026 World Cup tournament.
The South African Football Association (SAFA) has already started the process of identifying a new coach, with Broos set to vacate the position once South Africa’s World Cup campaign comes to an end.
And according to SAFA Technical Committee chairman Jack Maluleke, the former Al Ahly gaffer is among the high-profile candidates who have officially applied for the role.
The experienced tactician previously coached Bafana Bafana between 2010 and 2012 and could now be set for a dramatic return to the national team dugout.
“I can confirm that amongst the many top names of coaches who have applied for the Bafana Bafana job is indeed Pitso Mosimane. I have his CV with me,” Maluleke told Sunday World in Monterrey, Mexico.
The SAFA official further explained that despite Mosimane’s status and achievements in African football, the former Al Ahly and Mamelodi Sundowns coach will still undergo the same selection and interview process as the other candidates.
“We all know the passion of coach Pitso, his love for the country, and what his profile looks like, but he will also go through the interview process like everyone else because I have over 80 applications with me,” he added.
Maluleke also revealed that the federation plans to finalise the appointment process shortly after the World Cup as preparations begin for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers scheduled for September.
“So, we will finalise the process when we return home after the World Cup because we need someone who will come in and get the job started for the upcoming AFCON qualifiers around September,” he said.
Mosimane remains one of Africa’s most decorated coaches, having enjoyed enormous success with Mamelodi Sundowns and Egyptian giants Al Ahly, where he won multiple CAF Champions League titles and several domestic trophies.
His possible return to Bafana Bafana is expected to generate huge excitement among South African football supporters given his experience, tactical knowledge and strong winning mentality.
Meanwhile, South Africa remain focused on their World Cup campaign and are set to face Canada this evening in the Round of 32 in Los Angeles.
