Cape Verde secured a historic place in the Round of 32 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after holding Saudi Arabia to a goalless draw in their final Group H encounter.

The tournament debutants produced a disciplined performance to earn the crucial point needed to stay in contention before results elsewhere confirmed their progression to the knockout stage.

Cape Verde Threaten Early

Cape Verde created some of the better opportunities during the contest and nearly opened the scoring midway through the first half.

Willy Semedo danced his way to the edge of the penalty area before unleashing a powerful effort toward the bottom corner, but Saudi Arabia goalkeeper Mohammed Al Owais reacted brilliantly to push the ball away for a corner.

The African side continued to show confidence in possession while remaining organised defensively against the Asian representatives.

Goalkeepers Shine Before the Break

Saudi Arabia responded late in the first half through Mohamed Kanno, who rose highest near the penalty spot and directed a header toward the roof of the net.

However, veteran Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha produced an excellent reflex save to deny the midfielder and keep the score level heading into the interval.

The save proved crucial in a tense encounter where chances remained limited but decisive moments continued to emerge at both ends of the pitch.

Cape Verde Push for Winner

The second half saw Cape Verde increase the pressure as they searched for the goal that would secure qualification without relying on other results.

Jamiro Monteiro came close shortly after the restart when he latched onto a defence-splitting pass and fired a low effort toward goal, only for Al Owais to make another composed save.

Moments later, Kevin Lenini tried his luck from long range with a thunderous strike that narrowly missed the left post, with the goalkeeper seemingly beaten.

Cape Verde continued to threaten and almost found the breakthrough again in the 75th minute when Laros Duarte was denied by another excellent save from Al Owais after finding space inside the box.

Saudi Arabia Fall Short

Saudi Arabia’s final opportunity arrived deep into stoppage time when Abdullah Al Hamdan managed to create space inside the area, but his low effort lacked power and was comfortably gathered by Vozinha.

The result ultimately proved insufficient for the Saudis, whose World Cup campaign came to an end after failing to find the breakthrough.

Historic Qualification for Cape Verde

Although Cape Verde would have preferred victory to secure qualification outright, Uruguay’s defeat to Spain in the other Group H fixture ensured the debutants advanced in second place with three points.

Spain finished top of the group with seven points, while Cape Verde marched into the knockout stage in what has already become a historic World Cup campaign for the island nation.

The achievement marks a remarkable milestone for Cape Verde, who continue to impress in their first ever appearance on football’s biggest stage.
