World Cup 2026: Vladimir Petkovic imposes strict rules to keep Algeria focused
Algeria head coach Vladimir Petkovic has reportedly introduced a rigorous code of conduct during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with discipline and information control at the heart of his management approach as the Desert Foxes chase a place in the knockout stages.
According to Algerian newspaper Competition, players and staff have been instructed not to share any behind-the-scenes content from the team’s camp on social media, including photos from the hotel, training ground details or tactical information. The restrictions apply across all digital platforms, including Instagram, TikTok and X.
Petkovic has also prohibited the use of mobile phones and tablets during group meals, team meetings and treatment sessions in an effort to maximize concentration and strengthen unity within the squad.
The Swiss-born coach is equally demanding when it comes to nutrition. Players are forbidden from ordering food from outside the team hotel, with all meals prepared exclusively by the medical and nutritional staff and eaten collectively at designated times. Accommodation arrangements and services are reportedly standardized to avoid any feelings of favoritism or internal divisions.
The dress code is no different. Members of the delegation must wear official Algerian Football Federation attire while inside the camp, while personal brands and sponsorships are not permitted during team activities. Only federation partners are allowed visibility during the tournament.
Two incidents have already tested Petkovic’s authority since Algeria arrived in the United States.
Midfielders Ramiz Zerrouki and Ibrahim Maza were reportedly reprimanded after being seen riding electric bicycles through the streets of Lawrence, Kansas, the national team’s base camp. The coach viewed the outing as a breach of the discipline standards he established at the beginning of the tournament.
An even greater source of frustration came with the leak surrounding Mohamed Amoura’s injury ahead of Algeria’s crucial match against Jordan. Petkovic had explicitly instructed his staff and players not to reveal any sensitive medical information during the World Cup and refused to discuss the striker’s condition during his pre-match press conference.
The incidents underline the 62-year-old’s determination to maintain complete control over the environment surrounding the national team.
Since taking charge in February 2024, Petkovic has restored stability to Algerian football, leading the Desert Foxes back to the World Cup and earning a contract extension until 2028 after overseeing 21 wins in his first 28 matches.
For Petkovic, discipline is not merely a set of rules, it is a cornerstone of Algeria’s ambitions on football’s biggest stage. With qualification still within reach, the coach appears determined to ensure that nothing inside or outside the camp distracts his players from the task ahead.
