World Cup 2026: Chancel Mbemba insists DR Congo’s campaign is not over after setback
DR Congo captain Chancel Mbemba has insisted the Leopards remain focused on their World Cup campaign despite suffering a 1-0 defeat against Colombia in their second group-stage match.
The result ended DR Congo’s hopes of maintaining a perfect start to the tournament, with the team struggling to reproduce the performance they showed in their opening match against Portugal.
The Leopards found it difficult to settle into the game from the beginning, with a lack of composure affecting their decision-making in key moments.
Several misplaced passes and rushed choices gave Colombia opportunities to control the match and take advantage of a Congolese side that looked different from the team that impressed in their previous fixture.
Despite using a similar tactical approach and almost the same group of players, DR Congo were unable to find the rhythm that had characterised their earlier performance.
The defeat has been described as one of the most disappointing displays of the Sébastien Desabre era, considering the quality of players available to the team.
However, the loss has not ended their hopes of reaching the Round of 32. DR Congo now face the challenge of improving significantly in their final group match, where the result will be crucial for their qualification chances.
Mbemba, who leads the team on and off the pitch, called for determination and belief despite the setback.
” It’s not over yet. We accept the defeat, but we remain focused on the final. The best stories are written with courage in the face of difficulties ,” Chancel Mbemba said on his social media.
The Leopards’ final group match will carry major importance, with top spot in the group expected to be influenced by the outcome of Portugal’s result. The Portuguese side will also be looking to respond after their previous meeting with DR Congo.
DR Congo will return to action on Sunday, June 28, when they face Uzbekistan in a match that could decide their next step in the competition. The Leopards will need a stronger performance if they are to keep their World Cup journey alive.
