World Cup 2026: Teenage sensation Kerim Alajbegovic enters history books with record-breaking goal
Bosnia and Herzegovina wonderkid Kerim Alajbegovic etched his name into FIFA World Cup history after becoming the eighth-youngest goalscorer ever at the tournament during his country’s decisive 3-1 victory over Qatar.
The 18-year-old winger opened the scoring in the 29th minute, latching onto a clever pass from midfielder Ivan Basic before calmly finding the net to hand the Dragons a crucial advantage in Seattle.
At 18 years and 276 days old, Alajbegovic moved ahead of several iconic names in World Cup history, including Spain sensation Lamine Yamal, who scored at 18 years and 343 days, and Argentine legend Lionel Messi, who netted his first World Cup goal at 18 years and 357 days.
The strike also made the Red Bull Salzburg star Bosnia and Herzegovina’s youngest-ever scorer at a World Cup, underlining his status as one of the brightest talents to emerge from the nation in recent years.
Alajbegovic’s goal proved to be the turning point in a match Bosnia simply had to win. An own goal shortly afterwards doubled their lead before veteran captain Edin Dzeko celebrated his 150th international appearance with another influential display. Despite Qatar pulling one back before halftime, Bosnia held firm, and substitute Ermin Mahmic sealed the victory late on.
The teenager’s emergence has already sparked excitement among Bosnian supporters, who view him as a key figure in the country’s next generation. Born in Germany but representing Bosnia and Herzegovina, Alajbegovic joined Red Bull Salzburg in 2025 after progressing through the academies of FC Koln and Bayer Leverkusen.
Kerim Alajbegovic represented Bosnia and Herzegovina at all youth levels and also captained the under-17 team under coach Nedim Jusufbegovic.
In August 2025, he received his first senior call-up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Austria. Kerim Alajbegovic made his debut against the former on 6 September and marked the occasion by scoring a goal.
Kerim Alajbegovic’s performances at this World Cup have strengthened comparisons with some of the country’s great attacking talents, although coach Sergej Barbarez has stressed that the youngster is carving out his own path.
For Bosnia, the goal was about far more than records. It moved them to the brink of a historic first appearance in the knockout stages and provided a glimpse of a promising future built around one of world football’s most exciting teenage prospects.
