World Cup 2026: Emotional Neymar overwhelmed after long-awaited Brazil return

Brazil superstar Neymar admitted he was overcome with emotion after making his long-awaited return to international football in the Selecao’s 3-0 victory over Scotland at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 34-year-old came off the bench in the second half in Miami, ending an extraordinary 981-day absence from the national team. His previous appearance for Brazil came in October 2023, when he suffered the serious knee injury that kept him out of action for nearly three years.

Speaking after the emotional comeback, Neymar struggled to hide his joy.

“It’s been a great moment! A fantastic one, 100%! Thank you.”

The Brazilian icon was visibly moved at full time, breaking down in tears as supporters celebrated his return. He later embraced family members on the pitch in scenes that underlined the significance of the occasion after such a long and painful road back to fitness.

Although he did not get on the scoresheet, Neymar made an immediate impact after replacing Matheus Cunha, creating several chances and registering a shot on target during his cameo appearance. He finished with 24 touches and showed flashes of the creativity that has made him Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 79 international goals.

The night, however, belonged equally to a new generation. Vinicius Junior scored twice as Brazil secured top spot in Group C, while Cunha added the third goal to confirm qualification for the knockout rounds. Under Carlo Ancelotti, the Selecao have grown stronger with each match and now possess the welcome luxury of reintegrating Neymar into an already flourishing attack.

For Neymar himself, simply stepping back onto a World Cup pitch was a victory in its own right.

After 981 days of rehabilitation, setbacks and uncertainty, the Brazilian legend is finally back, and now hopes to play an even bigger role as the tournament enters its decisive stages.
