Gunners go club-to-club: Arsenal in direct contact with Leicester over Jeremy Monga move

Arsenal have intensified their pursuit of one of English football’s brightest teenage prospects, with direct club-to-club discussions now underway with Leicester City over a deal for highly-rated winger Jeremy Monga.

The North London club have been monitoring the 16-year-old for some time and have now advanced their interest into formal negotiations.

While no agreement has been finalised, talks are progressing in a respectful manner as all parties navigate a transfer involving one of the country’s most exciting young talents.

Monga has attracted widespread attention from elite clubs across Europe, but Arsenal have emerged as clear frontrunners after the player made it known that the Emirates Stadium was his preferred destination.

Rather than allowing the move to be settled through a tribunal process, Arsenal are seeking to reach a mutually acceptable compensation package with Leicester, reflecting both the player’s potential and the positive relationship between the clubs.

Arsenal’s recent success in developing young stars has only strengthened their appeal to emerging talents.

Monga would join a pathway that has already helped launch the careers of academy graduates and teenage standouts, making the club an attractive destination for the next generation.

The winger has already made history during the early stages of his career. He became the third-youngest player ever to appear in a Premier League match, behind Arsenal youngsters Max Dowman and Ethan Nwaneri, when he made his Leicester debut against Newcastle United at just 15 years and 271 days old.

Since that breakthrough appearance, Monga has accumulated valuable senior experience. He has featured 37 times for Leicester’s first team, with 30 of those appearances arriving during the 2025-26 campaign. Although many of those outings came from the bench, they provided important exposure at a level rarely experienced by players of his age.

Why Europe’s biggest clubs wanted him

Interest in Monga has been building for more than a year. His performances for Leicester’s Under-21 side alerted some of the biggest names in football, including Real Madrid, Manchester City and Chelsea. Despite the competition, Arsenal have remained firmly in pole position thanks to the player’s desire to join the Premier League champions.

Leicester had moved to protect their position by securing Monga on a scholarship agreement that began last summer and is scheduled to convert into a professional contract when he turns 17.

That arrangement ensured any interested club would need to negotiate a transfer fee rather than acquire him for a minimal compensation payment.

The Foxes, meanwhile, find themselves in a difficult period. Following relegation to League One and ongoing financial challenges, retaining their most promising academy talents has become increasingly difficult.

Recent years have already seen highly-rated youngsters depart for bigger clubs, and Monga could be the latest name to follow that path.

What makes Monga so coveted is his fearless attacking style. Predominantly right-footed, he thrives in one-versus-one situations, regularly driving at defenders before cutting inside to create shooting opportunities.

His confidence and dribbling ability quickly caught the attention of senior Leicester players during training sessions, where his willingness to take on more experienced opponents became a talking point. Leicester often deployed him from the left flank, though his versatility allows him to operate on either wing and even through central attacking areas.

The numbers underline his attacking instincts. Across more than 1,000 minutes of competitive action last season, Monga averaged nearly eight attempted take-ons per 90 minutes, highlighting his determination to challenge defenders whenever he receives possession.

Crucially, he has also shown an ability to create chances after beating opponents, demonstrating decision-making that belies his age.

There remains room for development. His defensive positioning and contribution without the ball require refinement, while greater consistency in his final pass and end product will come with experience. Yet those are expected areas of growth for a player still in the earliest stages of his career.
