Ivorian winger Simon Adingra set for Sunderland return after Monaco decision
Ivorian winger Simon Adingra is expected to return to Sunderland after AS Monaco reportedly decided against making his loan move permanent following an unconvincing spell in the Principality.
The 24-year-old joined Monaco on loan from Sunderland for the second half of the season and succeeded in rebuilding his fitness while earning valuable playing time.
His performances helped him secure a place in Ivory Coast’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but they appear not to have been enough to convince Monaco to retain him beyond the end of the campaign.
According to French newspaper Nice-Matin, Monaco’s management has been left underwhelmed by Adingra’s displays since his arrival. While the winger contributed three goals and two assists in 17 appearances, the club reportedly viewed his performances as inconsistent.
As a result, Monaco are said to have decided not to trigger the €17 million purchase option included in the loan agreement.
The decision brings an end to a temporary stay that initially offered Adingra an opportunity to revive his season. After struggling for regular opportunities before his move, the winger managed to regain match sharpness and re-establish himself as an option at international level.
However, despite those positives, Monaco’s hierarchy are understood to have concluded that the player does not fit into their long-term plans.
The reported decision means Adingra is now set to return to Sunderland ahead of next season. The Ivorian international will hope that the experience gained during his time in Ligue 1 can help him secure a more significant role with the English club.
Adingra remains tied to Sunderland on a long-term contract running until June 2030, leaving the Championship side in control of his immediate future.
The winger’s current market value is estimated at €22 million, according to Transfermarkt, a figure that exceeds the purchase option Monaco reportedly chose not to activate.
Financially, Adingra remains one of Sunderland’s notable assets. He is reported to earn an annual salary of approximately €4.2 million while under contract with the Black Cats.
For now, the next chapter of Adingra’s career appears set to begin back in England, with Monaco opting not to extend his stay despite his efforts to reignite his form during the second half of the season.
