World Cup 2026: Saudi coach hails Lamine Yamal as ‘biggest talent in the world’
Spain head into their Group H encounter against Saudi Arabia on Sunday still searching for a first win of the tournament, with attention firmly fixed on their teenage sensation Lamine Yamal.
The fixture offers an early test of their ambitions, as pressure builds following an underwhelming opening performance against Cape Verde.
Despite Spain’s uneven start, expectations remain high that the Barcelona winger could provide the decisive spark. Yamal, who delivered 24 goals and 17 assists in a standout domestic campaign that powered Barcelona to the La Liga title at just 18, continues to carry enormous responsibility on the international stage.
Saudi Arabia boss full of admiration
Saudi Arabia manager Georgios Donis has offered high praise for the young Spaniard, describing him as a generational talent already operating beyond his age.
“I think Yamal is maybe this period the biggest talent in the world. I think he started to replace Messi in Barcelona in the best way. I didn’t see a player at this age to make this difference and to have this quality and to play with this maturity.
“For me the most important is not about the skills, but about the maturity and he knows what he can do every moment and that is the biggest difference.”
Donis emphasised that Yamal’s composure and decision-making set him apart more than his technical ability, highlighting a level of awareness rarely seen in teenage footballers at the highest level.
A rare talent drawing global attention
The Saudi coach went further in his assessment, stressing the privilege of witnessing such a player emerge in modern football.
“It’s wonderful for the world of football to see talents like Lamine Yamal, and it’s beautiful to face players with this level of quality.
“I remember myself when I was coaching Abuel and we faced Barcelona during Messi’s era. And in general, I see that Lamine Yamal currently is the youngest talent who possesses the greatest quality alongside this maturity.”
His remarks underline the growing narrative around Yamal as one of the defining young figures of the global game, with comparisons increasingly drawn to former Barcelona icon Lionel Messi.
Spain’s hopes resting on teenage shoulders
For Spain, much of their World Cup trajectory appears linked to Yamal’s ability to influence matches on the biggest stage. Much like Argentina’s reliance on Messi in previous tournaments, there is a belief that Spain’s fortunes may hinge on their teenage forward delivering moments of inspiration.
As Sunday’s clash approaches, all eyes will again be on Yamal, with expectations that he can translate his club form onto the international stage and help Spain finally ignite their World Cup campaign.
