World Cup 2026: Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann wary of Ivory Coast threat
Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has warned his players to expect a difficult encounter against Ivory Coast, highlighting the Elephants’ defensive organisation, attacking pace and strength through the middle of the pitch ahead of their Group E meeting.
The Germans head into Saturday’s match following an emphatic victory over Curaçao in their opening fixture, while Ivory Coast also began their campaign on a winning note after defeating Ecuador.
Despite Germany’s strong start to the tournament, Nagelsmann believes the reigning AFCON champions possess the qualities needed to create significant problems for his side.
Speaking ahead of the match, the German coach pointed to several areas where Ivory Coast have impressed, particularly their ability to remain compact defensively while threatening opponents with quick transitions.
According to comments reported by Flashscore, Nagelsmann praised the Elephants’ overall balance and suggested their speed in attacking areas could prove especially dangerous.
The Germany manager also identified Ivorian forward Nicolas Pépé as one of the key players his team must be prepared to face.
Reflecting on Ivory Coast’s opening match, Nagelsmann admitted the winger made a major impression with his influence across the pitch.
He described the former Arsenal player as “truly unstoppable” during the previous game and noted that he was “everywhere.”
Nagelsmann revealed that Germany’s coaching staff had worked on plans designed to reduce the impact of Ivory Coast’s attacking strengths. However, he acknowledged that completely neutralising such qualities throughout the entire match would be a difficult task.
The upcoming contest is expected to play a significant role in shaping the Group E standings, with both teams seeking a second consecutive victory after successful starts to their World Cup campaigns.
Nagelsmann also used the opportunity to defend German winger Leroy Sané following criticism directed at the player after the victory over Curaçao.
Sané completed the full match but was unable to score, leading to negative comments about his performance.
The Germany coach dismissed those criticisms and publicly backed the Galatasaray winger, making it clear that he remains confident in the player’s abilities.
Nagelsmann said he does not appreciate such remarks about his players and believes Sané’s response should come on the field through a strong display in Germany’s next match.
With both Germany and Ivory Coast entering the contest full of confidence, Nagelsmann expects a demanding challenge against a team he clearly respects.
