World Cup 2026: South Africa legend Benni McCarthy doubts Bafana Bafana can beat South Korea in decisive clash
South Africa legend Benni McCarthy has cast doubt on South Africa’s chances of overcoming South Korea in their final Group A fixture at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Bafana Bafana head into Thursday’s decisive encounter knowing qualification hopes remain alive after a 1-1 draw with Czech Republic in Atlanta, but McCarthy believes the opportunity to secure an easier route may already have passed.
The former South Africa striker, who is currently in charge of the Kenyan national team, suggested that Bafana Bafana should have targeted their earlier matches more aggressively rather than leaving everything riding on the South Korea fixture.
“I felt there was an opportunity for South Africa to make it a little bit easier for themselves,” McCarthy said on BBC Sport.
“This was the game I would have targeted to really go for it and get three points because when you watch how South Korea played against Czech Republic…”
He added that the current scenario leaves South Africa facing a far tougher challenge than necessary, expressing skepticism about their chances in the final group match.
“If we say we have a chance against South Korea…I struggle,” he concluded.
The comments add further pressure on Hugo Broos and his squad as they prepare for a must-win clash that will determine whether Bafana Bafana progress to the knockout stages or exit the tournament early.
South Korea, known for their pace, organisation and high pressing style, are expected to provide a stern test, while South Africa will be required to deliver their most complete performance of the tournament to keep their World Cup hopes alive.
