World Cup 2026: Vozinha overjoyed as mother secures visa to watch Cape Verde matches
Cape Verde’s World Cup story has been defined not only by results on the pitch but by a deeply personal moment for veteran goalkeeper Vozinha, who has expressed delight after his mother secured a United States visa in time to watch him play against Uruguay this weekend.
The 40-year-old, who delivered a commanding performance in Cape Verde’s opening fixture, said the development carried enormous personal significance after years in which his family had struggled to share in his football journey in person. His mother, Ana Candida Evora, is now travelling from Praia to Miami after the breakthrough.
“For me, this is very important because all my family always supports me in everything,” Vozinha told reporters at the team’s training camp.
“And to have her here, for me, it’s something special. My father also is here, my brother, so I am very happy. I wish I could bring more, maybe my brothers and sisters and nephews, but I think sometimes it’s difficult.”
Heroics against Spain spark global attention
The emotional uplift follows a remarkable sporting achievement. Vozinha was named Player of the Match after producing a string of decisive saves in Cape Verde’s opening World Cup fixture, which ended in a shock 0-0 draw with European champions Spain in Atlanta.
His performance helped secure a historic point and instantly elevated his profile on the global stage. What had been a relatively modest social media following reportedly surged dramatically within days, fuelled in part by international media attention and online clips of his saves circulating widely.
The veteran goalkeeper was visibly emotional after the match, revealing a personal layer to his joy. He was raised by his grandparents, who have since passed away, and spoke openly about the absence of key family members during his defining career moments.
Visa breakthrough after viral appeal
His post-match comments resonated far beyond the stadium. Following widespread circulation of his emotional remarks, the United States State Department intervened, confirming that his mother had been granted approval to travel.
The development came after earlier complications linked to visa requirements affecting several visiting supporters during the tournament build-up. In some cases, applicants from certain countries were required to provide substantial financial guarantees before entry conditions were eased for match ticket holders.
For Vozinha, the reversal meant his family would finally be able to witness a defining chapter of his career from the stands rather than from afar.
A changing life off the pitch
The goalkeeper admitted the sudden global attention has been overwhelming but insisted his focus remains firmly on football as Cape Verde prepare for a crucial second group match.
His rising profile, amplified by broadcast exposure and social media traction, has transformed him into one of the unexpected stories of the tournament. Yet within the squad, the reaction has been one of collective pride rather than distraction.
Cape Verde midfielder Deroy Duarte said the squad had embraced the moment and shared in their teammate’s joy.
“Vozinha is a very good guy,” he said. “We’re all happy for him. I think this one match changed his life. So, no, it’s more of a thing of happiness, and it shows what the World Cup can do, and I think that’s it. We’re just happy for him.”
Uruguay test awaits as focus returns to football
Despite the emotional celebrations off the pitch, Vozinha has been keen to refocus attention on the tournament itself. Cape Verde now turn their attention to a demanding encounter against former world champions Uruguay, a fixture that could significantly shape their progression hopes.
The goalkeeper stressed that while personal milestones have added meaning to his journey, the team’s objectives remain paramount.
“We are here because of football,” he said. “We are here because of the national team and because of the World Cup. So I’m very grateful for everything, but please let’s speak about football.”
