World Cup 2026: István Kovács selected to referee historic 1,000th FIFA World Cup match
Romanian referee István Kovács has been handed the prestigious responsibility of officiating the 1,000th match in FIFA World Cup history when Tunisia face Japan in their Group F encounter at Monterrey Stadium on 20 June.
The landmark appointment was confirmed by FIFA, with the 41-year-old becoming part of a historic moment in the world’s biggest football tournament.
Kovács will be assisted by fellow Romanians Ferencz Tunyogi and Mihai Marica, while Costa Ricans Juan Calderón and Juan Carlos Mora will serve as fourth official and reserve assistant referee respectively.
To commemorate the occasion, FIFA and adidas presented Kovács with a special match shirt featuring gold sleeve stripes and a unique “Match 1000” patch.

The commemorative kit will also be worn by his assistant referees during the historic fixture.
FIFA Chief Refereeing Officer and Chairman of the FIFA Referees Committee, Pierluigi Collina, emphasized that the appointment was made on merit and according to the standard selection criteria used throughout the tournament.
“We selected the referee that we think is the best referee for this match,” Collina explained.
“By coincidence, he is also appointed for the 1,000th match. Refereeing a FIFA World Cup match is always a huge privilege and a great honour.”
The legendary Italian official, who refereed the 2002 FIFA World Cup final between Brazil and Germany, highlighted the significance of the milestone.
“Certainly, becoming part of the history of football and part of the history of the FIFA World Cup by officiating match number 1,000 is something extra.
We decided to create a special match kit to celebrate this match, featuring golden details and a patch displaying the World Cup trophy alongside the number 1,000,” he added.

Kovács has established himself as one of Europe’s most respected referees in recent years.
He was included in the panel of match officials for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, where he served as fourth official in eight matches.
The Tunisia-Japan encounter, however, marks his first appointment as the main referee in a FIFA World Cup match.
The historic assignment is another major milestone in a distinguished career that has seen Kovács officiate some of the biggest matches in European football.
Now, he will take centre stage in Monterrey as FIFA celebrates a remarkable landmark in World Cup history.
As the tournament continues to captivate fans across the globe, the Tunisia versus Japan clash will not only carry significant sporting importance but will also be remembered as the 1,000th match ever played at the FIFA World Cup, with Kovács entrusted to oversee the historic occasion.
