World Cup 2026: Tchouameni defends Dembele amid criticism after France’s win over Senegal
France midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni has come to the defense of teammate Ousmane Dembele following criticism of the Paris Saint-Germain star after Les Bleus’ 3-1 victory over Senegal in their opening 2026 FIFA World Cup match.
Despite France beginning their campaign with a comfortable win, Dembele’s performance drew scrutiny from some supporters and pundits, with questions raised about his influence on the game. The Ballon d’Or winner has also faced discussion about his role within Didier Deschamps’ system after starring in a more central position for PSG but operating in a wider role for France.
However, Tchouameni made it clear that Dembele remains one of the most important figures in the French squad, both on and off the pitch.
“Ah, Dembouz is Dembouz… First of all, he is a seriously important element in the team,” Tchouameni told Hoppen Media.
The Real Madrid midfielder highlighted the forward’s personality and leadership qualities within the dressing room.
“He’s the guy who laughs the most, he puts everyone at ease, and he is always in a good mood in the morning.”
While much of the focus surrounding France’s win centered on the performances of Kylian Mbappé and Michael Olise, Tchouaméni emphasized that Dembélé’s contribution goes beyond goals and assists.
“And on the pitch, he links the midfield and the attack. He is a leader in our team.”
The midfielder also urged people not to take for granted the privilege of playing alongside one of the world’s best footballers.
“It’s a privilege to have a Ballon d’Or winner in your team. I don’t know if people realize that. It’s crazy.”
Dembele entered the World Cup as one of the tournament’s biggest stars after a sensational season with Paris Saint-Germain. His performances earned him the 2025 Ballon d’Or and cemented his reputation as one of the world’s elite attacking players.
Although he was not at his explosive best against Senegal, France still secured an important victory thanks to goals from Kylian Mbappé and Bradley Barcola. The result placed Les Bleus in a strong position in Group I as they pursue a third World Cup title.
Tchouameni’s public backing is likely to provide a welcome boost for Dembele ahead of France’s next match. It also underlines the unity within the French camp, where teammates continue to show confidence in one another despite the intense scrutiny that comes with being one of the favourites to win the tournament.
With France’s World Cup campaign only just beginning, Dembele will have plenty of opportunities to remind critics why he is regarded as one of the most gifted players in world football.
