World Cup 2026: Ghana and Ivory Coast lead African challenge after mixed opening round
Africa’s 10 representatives have completed their opening fixtures at the 2026 World Cup, with Ghana and Ivory Coast delivering victories while several other nations produced encouraging results against some of football’s biggest names.
The continent’s first round of matches produced a mixture of disappointment, resilience and optimism, leaving qualification hopes alive for many teams heading into the second round of group-stage fixtures.
The strongest results came from Ivory Coast and Ghana. The Elephants became the first African side to secure victory by defeating Ecuador 1-0.
Later, Ghana followed suit with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Panama, giving the continent two valuable victories from its opening ten matches.
Several other African nations also demonstrated their ability to compete at the highest level despite failing to secure maximum points.
Morocco earned an impressive 1-1 draw against Brazil after a disciplined display, while Egypt collected a point against Belgium in another 1-1 result. DR Congo also produced a commendable performance to hold Portugal to a 1-1 draw.
Cape Verde added another memorable chapter to their football history by securing a goalless draw against Spain during their first-ever appearance at a World Cup finals. The result highlighted the growing competitiveness of smaller football nations on the global stage.
However, the opening round also brought difficult moments for several African teams.
South Africa were beaten 2-0 by Mexico, while Tunisia suffered the heaviest defeat among the continent’s representatives after a 5-1 loss to Sweden.
Senegal, who arrived at the tournament with significant expectations following recent continental success, were defeated 3-1 by France.
Algeria also endured a challenging start, losing 3-0 to reigning world champions Argentina in their opening Group J encounter.
Despite the mixed outcomes, Africa remains firmly in contention across multiple groups. With two victories, four draws and four defeats recorded after the first round of matches, the overall picture suggests that several teams remain well placed to challenge for places in the knockout stages.
The second matchday is now expected to play a decisive role in shaping the fortunes of many African nations as they seek to strengthen their positions and keep their World Cup ambitions alive.
