World Cup 2026: Infantino celebrates record 281,223 fans as tournament sets single-day attendance record

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has celebrated a historic milestone at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a record 281,223 spectators attended four matches on June 16, making it the highest-attended single day in the tournament’s history.

Taking to Instagram shortly after the conclusion of the day’s fixtures, Infantino expressed his delight at the remarkable turnout and thanked supporters for their role in creating a vibrant atmosphere across the host venues.

“16 June 2026 will go down in FIFA World Cup history! I cannot thank our fans enough for bringing colour, atmosphere and emotions to this tournament,” Infantino wrote.

The FIFA chief added that the tournament continues to demonstrate football’s global appeal and unifying power.

“The most inclusive FIFA World Cup 2026 continues to show just how much our game is loved and how Football Unites The World,” he said.

The record-breaking attendance was achieved across four matches played in different cities across North America.

In New Jersey, France defeated Senegal 3-1 in an entertaining encounter, while Norway produced an emphatic 4-1 victory over Iraq in Boston.

Elsewhere, defending world champions Argentina cruised to a comfortable 3-0 win over Algeria in Kansas City, and Austria overcame Jordan 3-1 in Santa Clara.

The combined attendance of 281,223 supporters surpassed every previous single-day attendance figure in FIFA World Cup history, underlining the enormous interest surrounding the expanded 48-team tournament.

With fans from across the globe flocking to stadiums and creating electric atmospheres, the 2026 World Cup continues to set new benchmarks both on and off the pitch.

As the competition progresses, FIFA will be hoping the record crowds remain a feature of a tournament that has already delivered memorable moments, passionate support and a celebration of football’s worldwide reach.
