World Cup 2026: How France’s halftime tweak dismantled Senegal’s masterplan

The opening Group I fixture at the New York New Jersey Stadium brought together two completely different footballing styles. France entered the match looking to establish immediate dominance through long spells of possession and technical skill. 

Their starting lineup featured a powerful midfield designed to control the rhythm, while a dangerous front line supported captain Kylian Mbappé.

This desperate pressure caused a brief breakdown in France’s defense. In the 95th minute, 18-year-old sensation Ibrahim Mbaye pounced on a loose ball inside the penalty area to score, giving Senegal a brief lifeline.

However, Senegal’s celebration left them completely exposed straight from the restart. As they rushed forward to press for a miracle equalizer, they forgot about their defensive duties. 

France played the ball directly to Mbappé on the left flank. With Senegal’s defense scattered, Mbappé isolated his defender, cut inside onto his right foot, and unleashed a spectacular long-range rocket into the top corner. This final moment of individual brilliance sealed the 3-1 win for the tournament favorites.
