Dwight Yorke linked Kaizer Chiefs coaching job

South African giants Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly identified former Manchester United star Dwight Yorke as a potential candidate for their vacant head coaching position.

The Soweto-based club are currently searching for a new man to lead the team following the departure of co-coaches Cedric Kaze and Ben Youssef Khalil. With preparations for the new season gathering pace, Chiefs are eager to appoint a permanent coach capable of restoring the club to its former glory.

Yorke has emerged as one of the names strongly linked with the role. The former Trinidad and Tobago international has been out of work since March after his tenure as head coach of the Trinidad and Tobago national team came to an end.

According to reports, discussions have already taken place between Yorke and Chiefs officials, fueling speculation that the 53-year-old could be in line for one of the biggest coaching jobs on the African continent.

Should the move materialise, it would mark Yorke’s first coaching role in South African football and another significant chapter in a career that has already seen him achieve immense success as a player. Widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers to emerge from the Caribbean, Yorke enjoyed a trophy-laden career at Manchester United, where he was part of the club’s historic treble-winning side in 1999.

Despite his impressive playing pedigree, Yorke faces competition for the position. Portuguese coach Fernando Cruz has also been linked with the vacancy and is believed to be under consideration as Chiefs weigh up their options ahead of a crucial appointment.

The club’s hierarchy are understood to be conducting a thorough recruitment process, keen to identify a candidate capable of guiding Amakhosi back into contention for major honours after several challenging seasons.

Excitement surrounding the coaching search intensified during the recent launch of the Toyota Cup, where Kaizer Chiefs Marketing Director Jessica Motaung revealed that the club expects to announce its new head coach next week.

Her comments have heightened anticipation among supporters, who are eager to learn who will take charge of one of the most high-profile teams in African football.

The incoming coach will inherit a squad under pressure to improve results and challenge consistently for domestic silverware. Expectations remain high at Naturena, and whoever is appointed will face the task of rebuilding confidence and delivering success for a fan base hungry for trophies.

With Yorke and Cruz among the names reportedly under consideration, the race for the Kaizer Chiefs job appears to be entering its final stages, with an official announcement expected in the coming days.
