Cape Verde stunned Spain with a disciplined defensive display on their World Cup debut on Monday evening, holding the former champions to a goalless draw in their Group H opener.

Despite relentless Spanish pressure and a series of clear chances, the Africans held firm, inspired by an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Vozinha.

Spain Start on the Front Foot

Spain immediately took control of possession and began carving out opportunities inside the Cape Verde penalty area, forcing the debutants into deep defensive positions.

The first big opening arrived in the 39th minute when Ferran Torres struck a first-time effort from close range that crashed against the crossbar. Mikel Oyarzabal reacted quickly to the rebound and attempted a difficult header towards goal, but Vozinha produced a crucial save to deny him. Spain’s pressure continued, earning a corner kick as they searched for the breakthrough.

Vozinha Denies Spain Before Half-Time

Just before the break, Spain were left in disbelief. In the 45th minute, Ferran Torres found himself unmarked inside the box and looked certain to score, but his first-time shot towards the bottom left corner was brilliantly saved by Vozinha.

Cape Verde survived another scare in the first half stoppage time. Aymeric Laporte rose highest from a corner in the 45+2 minute, heading towards the top left corner, but the effort lacked power and was comfortably gathered by the Cape Verde goalkeeper.

Cape Verde Hold Firm After the Break

Spain resumed the second half with the same intensity, but Cape Verde’s defensive structure continued to frustrate them.

In the 56th minute, Ferran Torres once again got on the end of a cross inside the box, attempting to steer a header towards goal. However, Vozinha was alert once more, blocking the effort to keep his side level.

As the pressure mounted, Spain continued to push forward in search of a winner.

Missed Chances as Spain Frustration Grows

In the 73rd minute, Mikel Merino was presented with a golden opportunity after a well-worked move inside the box, but his low shot was kept out by another sharp save from Vozinha.

Later in the 83rd minute, Marc Cucurella received a lofted pass and attempted a low drive towards the middle of the goal. However, the shot lacked power, allowing Vozinha to gather comfortably once again.

Late Cape Verde Effort and Final Whistle

Cape Verde had a rare attacking moment in the 90th minute when Kevin Lenini tried his luck from distance, but his effort was blocked. The resulting phase of play earned them a corner, offering a brief late chance.

Soon after, the final whistle confirmed a historic result for Cape Verde, who walked away with a hard-fought point against one of the tournament favourites.

A Famous Point for Cape Verde

With Spain unable to find a way past an inspired Vozinha, Cape Verde secured a famous goalless draw on their World Cup debut.

The result gives them a strong platform as they now turn their attention to upcoming Group H fixtures against Uruguay and Saudi Arabia.
