World Cup 2026: Yassine Bounou rallies Morocco to build on Brazil draw
Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou has called on his teammates to maintain their momentum following the impressive 1-1 draw against Brazil.
The highly-rated goalkeeper insists that the Atlas Lions have no intention of letting their World Cup journey stall after a promising start.
Focus shifts to Scotland challenge
The North Africans produced a disciplined and determined display in their Group C opener, earning a valuable point against the five-time world champions and strengthening belief within the squad ahead of their upcoming fixtures.
Speaking to reporters after the match, Bounou, widely known as Bono, praised the team’s performance and highlighted the importance of carrying that level into their next challenge against Scotland.
“Thank God, I think we came close to delivering what we have, and there were good moments when the team moved as required, and most importantly, we came out in good physical condition in preparation for the next match against Scotland, which will be a very tough encounter.”
While pleased with the result against Brazil, the experienced goalkeeper stressed that Morocco’s focus is firmly on the road ahead rather than dwelling on their opening achievement.
“We must continue the work we started, because we have put in a great effort, and it is essential that we continue with the same spirit and performance during the upcoming matches, and we will not stop at the Brazil station.”
No room for complacency
Morocco’s draw against one of the tournament favourites has generated optimism about the team’s chances of progressing from a competitive Group C, but Bono believes maintaining consistency will be the key to turning potential into success.
The goalkeeper’s message reflects the determination within the Moroccan camp to build on a positive opening performance and approach the remaining group matches with the same intensity and commitment.
A World Cup experience to cherish
The Al Hilal goalkeeper also encouraged his teammates to embrace every moment of the World Cup experience, describing the tournament as a rare opportunity that few players get to enjoy more than once in their careers.
“I want all the players to enjoy this participation in the World Cup, because such moments do not happen often and cannot be easily forgotten.”
Bono believes that combining enjoyment with commitment on the pitch can help Morocco achieve something memorable during the tournament.
“If we enjoy this experience and give our all on the pitch, it will be great for us, and we hope to achieve something big in this tournament.”
Qualification hopes remain alive
Morocco now turn their attention to a crucial second Group C encounter against Scotland, knowing that a victory could significantly strengthen their hopes of reaching the knockout stages.
After opening their campaign with a hard-earned draw against Brazil, the Atlas Lions will be aiming to take the next step and secure their first win of the 2026 FIFA World Cup as they continue their pursuit of qualification.
