World Cup 2026: I dreamt of coaching Egypt before retiring – Hossam Hassan
Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan has revealed that managing the Pharaohs was a lifelong ambition, insisting he envisioned himself leading the national team even before bringing an end to his illustrious playing career.
The legendary former striker made the remarks in an interview with FIFA as Egypt continue preparations for their opening Group G fixture against Belgium at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Hossam, one of the most iconic figures in Egyptian football history, described the sport as an inseparable part of his life and expressed pride in having served his country both as a player and now as a coach.
“Football is my life from the time I was a child until this moment,” Hossam told FIFA. “I am honoured to have been one of the leaders of the Egyptian national team for a very long time.”
The 59-year-old revealed that coaching the national team had been a personal objective long before he hung up his boots.
“Even before I retired from football, I imagined myself as the coach of the Egyptian national team. That was my ambition, and that is why I never thought about anything other than football,” he added.
Egypt are preparing for their return to the global showpiece with renewed optimism, and Hossam believes representing the country at the World Cup remains one of the greatest achievements in football.
“Reaching the World Cup as a player or as a coach is certainly a great and very special achievement,” he said. “Egypt should take its rightful place in world football.”
Reflecting on his experience as a player at the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy, Hossam admitted there was still a sense of unfinished business from that campaign.
“I think we did something good in 1990, but we did not complete the journey,” he recalled. “The team played well and was very close to qualifying, but it did not happen. Therefore, I hope, God willing, that I can achieve this dream as a coach.”
The Egyptian tactician also paid tribute to captain and talisman Mohamed Salah, praising the Liverpool star for his remarkable achievements and expressing hope that he continues to rewrite the record books.
“Mohamed Salah has broken countless records around the world and is one of the best players in the world,” Hossam said. “I hope he scores many more goals than me because the most important thing is for Egypt to win.”
He added: “If he scores those goals, it will be good for Egypt and good for me personally because it will make a difference for me as a coach. Our generations complement each other.”
Hossam concluded by highlighting the unique importance of football in Egyptian society, describing the sport as something that transcends the boundaries of a simple game.
“Football in Egypt is not something that can be taken lightly. It is not just a game; it is life itself,” he said. “Whenever Egyptians see the Egyptian flag, they rally around it at any time, especially when it comes to football.”
Egypt will be hoping to channel that national passion when they begin their World Cup campaign against Belgium, with Hossam eager to help the Pharaohs write a new chapter in their football history.
