Bayer Leverkusen set clear path for Francis Onyeka
Bayer Leverkusen have mapped out a clear long-term plan for highly rated midfielder Francis Onyeka, whose loan move to SV 07 Elversberg is now all but complete.
After initial reports from Sky about an imminent deal, Bild has revealed key details of the package and Leverkusen’s strategy for the 19-year-old. Onyeka is expected to join Bundesliga new boys Elversberg on a one-year loan, where he is earmarked as a regular starter in central midfield.
Before heading out, his contract with Leverkusen has reportedly been extended until 2032, making it the longest current deal at the club. The Bundesliga champions view the German youth international as a key part of their future and want him to gain consistent top-flight minutes in Saarland.
Last season, Onyeka was one of the standout performers in the 2. Bundesliga with VfL Bochum, scoring eight goals and adding one assist in 30 league games, a run that pushed his market value up to around 10 million euros.
According to Bild, Elversberg coach Vincent Wagner played a crucial role in the decision, seeing Onyeka as an important upgrade for the club’s first Bundesliga campaign. Leverkusen’s plan is straightforward: Onyeka develops further at Elversberg, returns in 2027 as a more complete player and eventually grows into a leading figure at the BayArena.
