Yaya Sithole has become the first player to be shown a red card at the FIFA World Cup 2026, marking an unfortunate milestone in the tournament’s early stages.

South Africa struggle under early pressure

The CD Tondela midfielder, who started for the Bafana Bafana in their opening Group A fixture, entered the match hoping to help his side begin their campaign on solid ground.

However, South Africa found themselves under sustained pressure from the hosts and struggled to gain control from the opening moments.

At the iconic Estadio Azteca, Mexico dominated possession and continually pushed forward, keeping South Africa pinned back for long periods.

Quiñones delivers early breakthrough

The opening goal arrived in the 9th minute after a defensive lapse from South Africa. Julian Quiñones reacted swiftly to the mistake, displaying sharp awareness inside the box before finishing clinically to give Mexico the lead and ignite celebrations in the stadium.

That early strike ensured the hosts carried a deserved advantage into the halftime break.

Second-half hopes quickly shattered

South Africa returned from the interval hoping to fight their way back into the contest, but their task became even harder almost immediately.

Just four minutes after the restart, Sithole was judged to have made a reckless challenge and was shown a straight red card by the referee, reducing South Africa to ten men.

Mexico seize control as pressure mounts

With a man advantage, Mexico increased their control of the game and pushed South Africa deeper into their own half. South Africa will now play with a numerical advantage for the rest of the game.
