World Cup 2026: Motsepe hails Omar Artan as Somalia’s referee receives global recognition
CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe has paid glowing tribute to Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan, describing him as a source of pride not only for Somalia but for the entire African continent following his visa issues ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Artan’s remarkable rise has become one of African football’s most inspiring stories. In 2025, he was named CAF Men’s Referee of the Year, a prestigious honour that reflected his growing reputation as one of the best match officials in the game. His selection for the World Cup further cemented his standing among the elite referees in world football.
Speaking about Artan’s achievements, Motsepe praised the Somali official’s impact on African football.
“Omar Artan has made Somalia and the entire African continent extremely proud,” Motsepe said.
The CAF president added that Artan’s recent accomplishments were fully deserved.
“His CAF Men’s Referee of the Year 2025 award and his appointment to the FIFA World Cup 2026 are a recognition of his world-class refereeing ability and the international respect he enjoys.”
Artan’s profile has continued to grow despite recent challenges. Ahead of the World Cup, he returned to Mogadishu after being unable to travel to the United States because of entry restrictions. The setback drew widespread support from across the football community, with many viewing the situation as unfortunate given his achievements and contribution to the sport.
Support for Artan has extended beyond football circles. Reports from Somalia indicated that a local businessman even offered financial assistance and support as a gesture of appreciation for the referee’s service to the nation and his role in raising Somalia’s profile on the international stage.
In another major boost to his career, Artan has been appointed to officiate the 2026 UEFA Super Cup between Champions League winner PSG and Europa League champion Aston Villa, one of the most prestigious fixtures in European football. Motsepe revealed that UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin played a key role in making the appointment possible. The UEFA Super Cup will be played at the Red Bull Arena on 12th August.
“I am grateful to my friend Aleksander Čeferin for enabling him to officiate the UEFA Super Cup 2026,” Motsepe said.
The CAF chief believes the appointment represents a milestone not only for Artan but also for African refereeing as a whole.
“This is a great honour for Omar Artan and African referees, and a strong example of football uniting Africa, Europe, and the world.”
