Somalia Sports Minister praise referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan

Somalia’s Prime Minister, Hamza Abdi Barre, has praised referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan for his determination and professionalism after the official’s hopes of participating in the 2026 FIFA World Cup were dashed.

Barre welcomed Artan to his office in Mogadishu following the referee’s return from the United States, where he had been scheduled to attend FIFA’s preparatory seminar for World Cup match officials.

The Somali referee was unable to take part in the tournament after being denied entry into the US, ending what would have been a historic appearance as the first Somali official to referee on the field at a FIFA World Cup.

During their meeting, the Prime Minister commended Artan’s remarkable rise in football officiating, describing him as a source of inspiration for young Somalis. He encouraged the referee to remain committed to his ambitions and continue pursuing success at the highest level despite the recent disappointment.

Barre also expressed confidence that Artan’s achievements would continue to bring pride to Somalia, noting that his journey reflects the resilience and potential of the country’s youth.

Artan has become one of Somalia’s most celebrated sporting figures in recent years. Since earning his FIFA badge in 2018, he has officiated at major continental competitions and broken new ground for Somali football on the international stage.

Among his notable accomplishments are becoming the first Somali referee to officiate at the Africa Cup of Nations and establishing himself among the continent’s most respected match officials.

His appointment to the 2026 FIFA World Cup had been regarded as a landmark moment for Somali sport, highlighting the progress made by the nation’s football community.

Although he will not be part of this year’s tournament, support for Artan has continued to pour in from government leaders, football stakeholders and supporters across the country.

Many Somalis view his achievements as a symbol of perseverance and determination, with his career serving as motivation for aspiring referees and athletes seeking to make their mark internationally.

Despite the setback, Artan remains one of Somalia’s most accomplished sports personalities and is expected to continue representing the nation in future international assignments.
