World Cup 2026: Former Saudi star tips Algeria to advance from Group J
Former Saudi Arabia international Ahmed Ateef has shared his predictions for Group J of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, backing Algeria to finish ahead of Jordan and secure progression to the knockout stages.
The two Arab nations have been drawn alongside Argentina and Austria in what promises to be a highly competitive group during the tournament in North America.
Ateef Predicts Algeria Will Edge Jordan
Speaking on the television programme “Our League is Different”, Ateef expressed confidence in Algeria’s chances of outperforming Jordan during the group stage.
“I believe that the Algerian national team is superior (to Jordan) in terms of technical capabilities, and I think that it will beat Jordan in their group match.”
His comments add to the growing debate among football fans across the region regarding which Arab side is better positioned to challenge for qualification.
Predicted Group Standings Revealed
The former midfielder also outlined how he expects the group table to finish at the end of the first round.
“The ranking will be Argentina, Austria, Algeria, and then Jordan. This is on a technical level, and I hope that the reality will be different.”
Under the 2026 World Cup format, the top two teams in each group automatically advance to the knockout stage, while the eight best third-placed teams across the tournament also progress.
Austria Viewed as Major Threat
Ateef highlighted Austria as one of the strongest teams in the group and believes they possess the quality to challenge for a top-two finish.
“Austria is a strong team, not a simple one. They were a strong competitor in the last edition of the European Championship, Euro 2024′, and they have professional players at a high level in the strongest European leagues, and they may have a long history in the tournament.”
Group J Battle Set to Attract Attention
With Argentina widely regarded as favourites to top the group, much of the attention is expected to focus on the battle between Austria, Algeria and Jordan for the remaining qualification places.
The clash between Algeria and Jordan could prove decisive as both nations look to secure a place in the knockout rounds of the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup.
