Asante Kotoko turn to Stanley Menzo to lead sporting strategy
Asante Kotoko have appointed former Ajax and Netherlands goalkeeper Stanley Menzo as the club’s new sporting director, handing the experienced Dutchman responsibility for shaping the sporting and technical direction of one of Ghana’s most successful football institutions.
The appointment comes as the club continues to strengthen its organisational structure while awaiting the arrival of a new head coach.
Menzo, 62, will play a central role in overseeing football operations and helping to guide the club’s long-term development strategy.
In his new position, the former Netherlands international will be responsible for several key areas, including technical planning, transfer strategy, youth development and strengthening the pathway between the academy and the first team.
Asante Kotoko have also tasked Menzo with supervising the technical affairs of the senior team until a permanent head coach is appointed. The move places him at the heart of the club’s football operations during an important transitional period.
The appointment brings a wealth of experience to the Ghana Premier League side. Throughout his playing career, Menzo represented some of Europe’s notable clubs, including Ajax Amsterdam, PSV Eindhoven, Lierse and Bordeaux.
His achievements on the pitch earned him recognition as one of the most accomplished goalkeepers of his generation. Menzo was part of the Netherlands squad at the 1990 FIFA World Cup and helped Ajax enjoy success in European competition.
During his time with the Amsterdam club, he won the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1987, reached the final of the same competition a year later and was also a member of the Ajax side that lifted the UEFA Cup in 1992.
Following his retirement from playing, Menzo built an extensive coaching career that took him across different continents.
His managerial and coaching experience includes spells with FC Volendam, SC Cambuur, Ajax Cape Town and Beijing Guoan. He also worked with the national teams of Aruba and Suriname, where he most recently served.
Speaking through the club’s official channels after his appointment, Menzo expressed his enthusiasm about beginning a new chapter in Ghanaian football.
“It is an honor to join a club of Asante Kotoko’s caliber and history. The passion of the fans and the ambition of the management made my decision easy.
I look forward to working with the coaching staff, the players, and the entire Kotoko family to build something exceptional and win the trophies this club deserves,” he said.
The appointment represents a significant addition to Asante Kotoko’s leadership structure as the club seeks to strengthen its football operations and build for the future under the guidance of one of the most experienced figures in the game.
