In-form Kobbie Mainoo scores for Manchester United against Liverpool

Diogo Dalot believes Kobbie Mainoo has emerged stronger from a difficult spell under former manager Ruben Amorim, insisting the midfielder’s recent impact reflects both resilience and steady development.

Mainoo delivered the defining moment on Sunday, striking a 77th-minute winner as Manchester United edged Liverpool 3-2 to secure qualification for the Champions League.

The victory also sealed a first league double over their rivals since the 2015-16 campaign, with the young midfielder at the centre of the celebrations.

His decisive contribution marked a sharp contrast to earlier struggles this season, when opportunities were limited under Amorim.

Mainoo did not start a single league match during that period and grew increasingly frustrated, even exploring potential moves away from Old Trafford, with Napoli among the clubs linked during both transfer windows.

Since Michael Carrick assumed charge, however, the 21-year-old has been revitalised. Trusted with a more prominent role, Mainoo has become a key figure in United’s midfield, repaying that faith with composed and influential performances.

Dalot, speaking after the win, highlighted the role adversity played in shaping his teammate’s progress. “I think it shows the level that he can become. I think it’s becoming a very complete player. Even in the last couple of games, you could see him stepping up his game.

“And I mean, really pleased that, not because he scored the goal.

“He has quality for that, but overall, he’s a fantastic kid that worked really hard to be in this position. So really, really happy with him.”
