Yoane Wissa fights for Newcastle future with ‘soldier’ vow after injury-hit start
Yoane Wissa has moved to reaffirm his commitment to Newcastle United, insisting he remains determined to succeed at St James’ Park despite a disrupted start to life on Tyneside that has fuelled uncertainty over his long-term future.
The forward’s debut campaign has been heavily affected by fitness setbacks, beginning with a pre-season injury and followed by recurring niggles that have limited his rhythm and consistency.
Those physical challenges have, in turn, prompted external speculation that the club could consider parting ways with him in the summer.
However, Wissa has pushed back firmly against that narrative, stressing his desire to establish himself within the squad and contribute meaningfully when fully fit.
Speaking on Joel Beya’s YouTube channel, he acknowledged that his recovery timeline may have been rushed, a decision that ultimately hampered his integration.
The forward explained that missing a full pre-season had a significant impact on his adaptation process, particularly in building understanding with new teammates and adjusting to the club’s tactical demands.
“I didn’t wait the proper time to come back (from injury). It should have definitely been more,” Wissa said.
“When I first met the guys I was injured. The link-up with the players, pre-season is pre-season but you have a lot of friendly games to make mistakes and to say to the guys, try this. I missed that.
“You just want to catch the train, but that was impossible, because my knee wasn’t right. I knew that but it is such a privilege to be there.
“I am a soldier. I will keep going. I want them to know the love I have for this shirt. Looking forward to next season, I understand how big this club is, I hope I’m going to do better. To perform at Newcastle is something unbelievable for me.
“I know so many players struggle in their first year. I am looking forward. I hope I am going to have some goals towards the end. It’s such a privilege. I just want to wear the shirt.”
