Nottingham Forest's hard work pays off with impressive victory over West Ham

Nigerian international Ola Aina has spoken with admiration about Nottingham Forest’s European heritage as the club prepares for a defining Europa League semi-final first leg against Aston Villa, insisting the current squad is driven by a desire to create its own place in history.

Forest return to the European stage on a significant night at the City Ground, with belief growing inside the dressing room that another landmark achievement is within reach.

For Aina, the occasion carries added meaning, not only because of its competitive weight but also due to the club’s legacy in continental football.

The full-back highlighted his light-hearted exchanges with former Forest captain and European Cup winner John McGovern, using them as a reminder of what the club once achieved and what it still aspires to replicate.

“Every time I see John McGovern, I always remind him of being a ‘Champions League winner’,” Aina smiled. “As much as it’s a joke, it reminds us the club has a rich history and we are working hard to add our own history.”

That sense of ambition, he explained, is shared across the squad, with belief growing that success in Europe is not beyond reach if standards remain consistent.

“With the players we have, the staff, team and everyone around the club, it’s not a far-fetched dream to have. We are working towards those types of objectives.”

Aina also underlined his confidence in the group’s mentality, pointing to a collective determination to translate potential into silverware. The Nigerian international believes such moments define careers and leave a lasting legacy.

“To win a trophy would be fantastic, amazing; to say you’ve contributed to something like that is something nobody can take away. Hopefully this is another stepping stone and we can get it done.”

With anticipation building ahead of kick-off, Aina acknowledged the magnitude of the occasion for both players and supporters, describing it as a moment the squad has been building towards throughout the campaign.

“It’s definitely a special game. It’s a massive night for the club and the majority of the players in the dressing room. Everyone is relishing being a part of this occasion.”
